I'm not disputing what you said about TLC, I've just worked with the stuff (from a manufacturing standpoint) for many years.

ok i did a quick search of discovery.com and the history channel. as well as how its made.com and i couldnt find anything and i wanted to get off the computer. so i am going to give up the search for now. i can tell you what i remember about the procedure. i didnt even read any of the about links at all ever.

what they showed was them using super paper thin sheets of wood. for the bottom layering of the laminate. and or maybe for the molds of the plastic they sprayed ior applied in the mold. or maybe they used a paper to spray the plastic on to. then they would take the plastic and let it dry after it was baked. then it was put into a storage rack. some where in the drying and storage process i think they trimmed off the excess to make is squared up to a certain size. they then took the thin wood and layed that down into a mold for the press. then they would lay a thin sheet of paper over that. then came a layer of the plastic. and then a layer of the paper again. they done this to build up atleast 3-4 or even more layers of paper and plastic on top of the wood. then it was sent to a heated press. where the laminate was made in the final process. The layering of the plastic could produce several color designs and affect i think . anyway the wood was on the bottom of the whole layering of the production of it. but it was a super paper thin layer of wood. as well as the papaer and the palstic that was all used.

Great job! I'm going to do something similar so it's nice to see that the finished job looks great. I'm going to use my orginal particle board headliner, treat it with a bleach solution to kill the mold, reshape it using the top of the truck, and cover it with something.

Bruiser,

That is one nice clean headliner for sure, and I bet it will long outlast our originals.
I've got to address mine as well, I think I'll take this route. Thanks for sharing!

I brought my chrome trim back to life with NeverDull, the wadding cleaner for brass insignia. My all-original 67's chrome was covered with rust spots, pitting, etc., but with the NeverDull and elbow grease I got the clean look back.

For now I am sticking with the factory headliner.

Yes! It will split very easily. My wife and I did every counter in my old high school plus I have done several kitchens with the stuff. With a large piece it can be very easy to split.

since we are posting pics of headliners, thought i would share mine. I did a oak veneer with cedar strips for a warm look. the interior will eventually be an earth tone color, thus the wood.

Stayed up till 11:30 last night getting my headliner installed. I used a peice of 4'x8' Hardboard I bought from Lowes. The stuff is like peg board but without the holes. It does the trick but I wouldn't recomend it.

1: Its to thick I had to push up the trim to get the visors to line up right. :help:
2: It really doesn't comform well because its like a 1/4" thick.
3: I would say go for it if the headliner was flat but since there is the curves I say go for something thinner and more flexable.
4: It was 7 bucks for the board, but I probably spent about 10 hours in total. :wf:

I think I am going to go back and get wood panneling like Jveenker has in his truck. :yt:
It will go faster since I have a better template then my old broken in half and rained on headliner.

That looks nice. I like seeing another woodworker's work.
The pegboard stuff is too thick to make the corners bend like they need to but you did a good job of it 72highboy.
If anybody is near me I still have 2-3 5x12' sheets of laminate under the house left over from the high school we did. Free for the asking but I won't try and ship.
jveneker have you thought about wooden door panels and arm rests? I would love to try it on my 71 but I have had my truck for about 32 years now and don't think I could handle that much of a change

Thats the one thing I miss when my headliner was out I used to put things up in where that cab lip is. Pens, pencils, my knife, pack of bubble gums, writing paper. Now I have no place for it.
