The regulator looks fine- nothing is cooked.. Could be the alt? I'll try removing the B+ and try starting it with B+ removed?

yep. If you had an ohm meter you could read starter wire to ground above 4 ohms is good. Alternator with B+ removed is the same. 4 ohms is a light bulb and they will burn out exposed to air but that is a good value to stop at less than 4 you know it is shorted.
