re: dont be stupid
I did almost the same thing in my 98 f150 last year...I was being an idiot trying to show off to the rice rocket behind me....and with some college buddies in the truck, I put it into nuetral and revved it up to 4500 and dropped it into drive...it was the loudest bang ever and I didn't realize right away that it was my driveshaft...I thought the guy hit the back of me ....so I jump out of the truck and start coming at the guy swearing...until my friend told me what had happened.....I put so much stress on the rear end that the differential housing actually moved and shifting way upward...busting the driveshaft in half. The repair in my apartment complex parking lot got me on their **** list....I guess trucks on jack stands without a rear axle is a problem...but I made it out of that mess for 300 bucks including a junkyard driveshaft. Will it ever happen again? Yeah...probably
The Landlord: "Are you guys starting an automobile repair shop out of my house or something?"
"No, these are all our cars."
"The three of you have eleven cars???"

re: dont be stupid
All right,I'll confess,I also 'upshifted' a '76 Ford into reverse when I thought it was stuck in second gear...Of course it was a friend's car,and I did tell him about it,...about a month later....after he sold the car....
John,as long as we're all second-guessing your old Willys,....I thought they were only making the jeeps during the war...You sure it wasn't a '40 or a '41?....

don't put this in concrete but i think willys made only the trailers for the jeeps. ford and dodge made the jeeps and ford made most of them. i got that from watching the history channel awhile back.

re: dont be stupid
Joe, the way it was explained to me was that they were holdover's from '41, but sold in '44 and titled as the year sold (guess they used to do that alot back then?). The title said 1944... I had a few people argue that with me, so used ot carry a copy of the title to show. It was the same look as the '41 and all the parts fit, so that's what I figured happened. It was sure alot of fun to drive!!

re: dont be stupid
Makes sense to me,John...I had also heard the early WWII jeeps were made by Ford, but as far as the Willys coupes,I'm going back to my memories of my model car days...
You probably had a 445 cu. in. in that Willys...When I was sixteen, and just got my licence,my dad blew the tranny on his aluminum blocked v-6 Buick Special, and bought a '65 Buick Wildcat with power brakes and a 445 cu. in. motor(at least that's what it said on the air cleaner)...The first time I drove it,I put it in reverse to back out of the driveway, put my foot on the gas as if it were the old aluminum v-6 and laid a patch the length of the driveway, which of course freaked me out and I stomped on those power brakes, banging my head on the steering wheel...

re: dont be stupid
ok not to be picky but i was wrong in my post about the buick engines. the 425 cu in engine had 465 torque like was first stated the horsepower was 340. the 401 cu in engine was 445 torque with a horsepower of i think 325. the reason everyone always got the cu in wrong was because the air cleaner had the torque rating on it and not the cu in. a sales plot of course. what you see isn't what you think your getting.those engines were aslo called a wildcat engine. as well one of the buick models was also a buick wildcat. at least i feel better that i got my facts straight

Re: re: dont be stupid
sorry to tell you this, but the real reason Ford was producing Jeeps was because Willys couldn't keep up with the war effort. Ford produced Jeeps under license from Willys, after the war dept. gave them a 2nd place finish for their prototype. Dodge never made a Jeep, ever until they bought the company from AMC in 1987.fordman wrote:don't put this in concrete but i think willys made only the trailers for the jeeps. ford and dodge made the jeeps and ford made most of them. i got that from watching the history channel awhile back.
there is a good history of the Jeep and its production all over the 'Net, a google search will tell the tale.
here is one link I found for ya.

Yep Fordman, this one said 465 Wildcat on the breather... had a small tunnel manifold and a stock 4 barrel... nice nice running engine! It would sit there and idle so smooth and quiet, then just LAUNCH you when you nailed it! The combination with the Dynaflow and torque tube style driveline really made for traction!! I got out of a ticket one night because they didn't hear the tires spin.. I wound up putting a 396/TH400 in it and it wasn't NEAR as good as the old Buick!
Sure miss that car!!

like i said don't put it in concrete i was just going off what i thought i remembered the history channel program said. and yes that was the reason ford was making the jeeps. i'm not trying to say i know it all thats why its not set in stone or concrete asi put it.

re: dont be stupid
When I first started driving I did basically the same thing, only I was shifting to neutral and hit reverse at only about 15 mph and that was violent enough!bigdoug22 wrote:
how about upshifting at 55 because the truck hasnt shifted out ou second and accindently going into reverse boy do the tires squeel i must admit the fmx is one tough tranny
I can't even imagine it at 45 or 55 mph.
Like Heavenlyfire stated;
I have a C6 in mine and I was never going to tell anyone about it either!

re: dont be stupid
When I was 16-17 my cousin had a 68 F100 SWB with a junkyard 390 with a c6 and a piece of 1/4" rod sticking through the floor for a shifter. He took off one day in low with his foot through the floor, hit second went for third and hit reverse. I thought the frontend had fallen out from under it because all I could see was the pavement through the windshield, tires squalling he jerked back into first or second and kept on going. We used to abuse the hell out of that truck....sigh...memories!

re: dont be stupid
OK, I guess I might as well share my 'I'm an idiot' story.
When I was younger I was driving a mid-80s Pontiac Phoenix (like a Chevy Citation). The front metal brake line got a hole in it, so the brakes went out. At the time I was living by myself in a new city, didn't know anyone and I was broke. I still had to go to work though (about 2 miles), so I ended up driving that car slowly on the backstreets for almost a week till payday with absolutely NO brakes. Whenever I started approaching a stop sign, I'd shift into neutral and slowly coast up to it, then quickly hit Reverse and then Neutral again several times in a row to get the car stopped. Of course, the car would lurch pretty violently each time I did that. I don't believe I didn't ruin the tranny, but it did hold up. When I got paid at the end of the week I replaced the brake line....but I have to say, this probably ranks among the top of the dumbest things I ever did.

If you are grenading u-joints, you may want to go with the Spicer case hardened ones. They have the blue grease seals, or did anyway. Also if you install the u-joints so the grease fitting hole is in compression and not extension during acceleration, your u-joints are about twice as tough.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.
