yes the dodge dakotas do have a similar setup in the passenger side of the dash. my 88 has one. i dont know when they started using them or when they stopped. if they stopped the same type as i have. i do know they are in 88-95 that is when the body changed. anyway the dakota type have a little bar on the bottom that flops down. to stop the cup from falling through. if it is a straight cup. so putting it under the seat may not work in high hump floors. i dont know measurements would have to be taken to be sure. if you want a picture i can probably get one later today.

NPD make a cup holder that goes into the ashtray. Just saw it in the catalog, page 27, and remembered this post.

I looked at that and it only shows 73-79.
What is the difference between the ashtray tracks from bumps to dents?

Probably about an inch and a half...

In other words, it won't work.

Big Blue are you sure they were not out of a 95 or so Mustang? The cupholders I am talking about. I think I remember looking for something like that to fit in the dash of my daughter's 96 Mustang since her's did not have a cup holder. Great idea you had there though. I really like that. I am a woodworker so I just built a box that sits in the center. Has a lift up lid to store stuff like personal protection and a drink holder closer to the seat. The personal protection I am talking about is of the .357 type not what some of you more dirtier minds might have been thinking of. lol

The cupholder I used came out of a 89-95 Mercury Sable or Taurus. Wish it were big enough to store the personal protection you're talking about....just for those who may be alergic to lead.....

We've had 2 Taurus, a 95 T Bird and a 96 Mustang. I get all of the interiors confused. lol I guess it was the Taurus but got to thinking about the T-Bird. I think they had something similar also. Might be worth looking in the yard for those interested as there are usually at least a couple in there

Big Blue 72 wrote:My bad. It wasn't a Mazda. I did some checking and that unit comes out of an 89-95 Mercury Taurus or Sable. Not sure how I could've confused that with a Mazda. :hmm: Ebay generally always has a few if you can't find them at a pull-a-part place. Just a little warning though. I wish it'd been something I just slapped under the seat, but it wasn't. It took a bit of fabrication to make it work. The "cup" holder sits under the "coin" tray. Since the cup holder would have sat darn near directly on the carpet I had to swap the position of the trays to raise the clearance level of the "cup" tray to give me more room to set a drink into the holder. In order to do that you have to pry the trays out, remove a flip down piece that's orignially meant to hold the bottom of a soda can and shave off a couple plastic "stops". It sounds easy but I remember it being kind of a pain in the ass. I like how it turned out though. You could save yourself A TON of time and not have to modify anything if you could find a place to mount it under the dash.
nice! i actually have one in my 94 taurus, im seriously considering stealing for my truck now! thanks for the idea and pics :)

One very important thing I mistakingly left out when I posted pictures of the cupholder I installed.

My seat sits on insudstrial aluminum brackets the approximate thickness of a 2x4. This raises the seat high enough to instal the cup holder above the transmission tunnel. The cup holder won't fit underneath the seat in this area without the seat being raised.

When I first bought my truck the previous owner had his seat sitting on wooden 2x4's. 2x4's seemed to work fine but I ended up replacing them with the aluminum brackets you see in the below photo's.

I think the 95 ford truck in the back had a cup holder that folds into the side of the super cab if I remember correctly. I can't remember how they worked I just remeber seeing one folded in but I might have to look and see. I have the seats out of a 95 the 40/20/40 and it has a cup holder in the fold down seat, but when my truck is done I will be like starsky and no drinking in the truck.
