the blue wire you have in the first pis is normally hooked to another blue wire in the dash harness that goes to the flasher unit switch. disconnect that blue wire from there and look in your harness right near the other plugs back in there and you should see where to plug it back into the correct wire.

Well. Both the orange and blue wires are plugged into the connector shown in the pic. You are saying that neither one of should be there, correct? How large is the flasher connector you mentioned? How many pins? Knowing that will help me find it. I gave a quick look this morning and didn't see it.

I believe I now know the problem. A PO switched instrument panels from idiot gauges to ammeter/oil gauge. The the red and yellow wires for the ammeter in my panel are not on the other receiving connector. One is green/red stripe and that is #904 as seen on the diagram for idiot gauges.
Well....Thanks for all the help. I'll live with it until I can find an instrument panel with idiot gauges.
A true let down b/c I hate idiot gauges but I learned a heck of aot in the process.

Yep, that is the wire spliced in there kinda like I was thinking / wondering... Sorry that is what it turned out to be... Glad you got it figured out!
FYI the wire diagrams for 68-70 seem to be pretty much the same that I have seen so far (may be a slight wire color change but most routing seems to be the same)... then the 71-72 are pretty much the same...

If it Looks good and Works good then it's ok by me. Everything has its issues from time to time...
