Question-Grant Steering Wheel Install

Post by capeclassics »

Seems like whenever I try a DIY project something always gets in the way.OK,got the original Steering Wheel off-no problem. Now,the instructions say to take the sleeve that cancels the turn signals off the original SW and to put it on the new splined part--Of course it doesn't give ya a clue as to what orientation it goes on.And for some bizarre reason it isn't obvious to me.This sleeve kinda clamps on....and it has a "stem" sticking down which I guess cancels the turn signal.HELP!!!!

Put it on the new steering wheel with the nub sticking out.

And if you are looking at the wheel with it on the column, the nub needs to be pointing due left, right in the middle.(to the right if you are holding the wheel in your hand looking at the back)
When the going gets tough, your doing something right.

You'll want to torque the nut that holds the adapter or steering wheel to the column to 45 - 55 ft.-lb.

OK,I'm still goofing around with this project.........here's my problem-the new (grant)"hub"the splined collar that goes onto the splined steeering shaft doesn't seem to wanna go on far enough. When the whole deal is together, there is an 1/4 inch space between the "cover" and the stock column(where the turn asignal stuff is). Also, when the steering shaft nut is tightened all the way down(using a braker bar),the end of the threaded shaft is even with the uppermost part of the nut.In other words, the threaded shaft does not protrude from the top of the nut.It is the correct Grant adapter kit,so I'm at a loss.HELP!

When I installed my steering wheel I had the same problem with the gap. If you loosen the two bolts that hold in the steering column underneath the dash, you should be able to slide the column up enough to close the gap but be careful because if you move it to much it might become disconnected from your steering. Check out my custom interior!!!

Sweet interior!!! So,when you slid your column up did the splined shaft position change??
I'm probably wrong but my impression is that the "collar" isn't going down far enuf on the splined shaft--I'm concerned because the instructions say to put the collar on only hand tight. My inclination is to whack it down some with a hammer???????????????

when you move up the steering column the housing only moves not the shaft inside of it and when you move up the housing it shortens how much of the shaft sticks up from the top.
