Getting started welding bed seams
Well, it was another very slow Friday at work, so I ended up taking the afternoon off and heading to the shop to get in a few hours of work. I got the front end of the bed mostly stripped down...
...and then I got started on something I've been debating about doing since I got this bed: welding up all the bed seams. Whoever assembled this box on the assembly line was having a good day, and all the seams are lined up very well, so filling these in will actually be pretty easy.
That's the only section I got done tonight before a migraine sent me home, but I thought it was a good start. It's definitely gonna take some time, but I think it'll look really good when I'm done. They'll still need a very thin layer of filler, but overall what I got done so far came out feeling pretty smooth after the welds were ground down.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to do this with the hood or the rear cab seams, because the edges don't line up very well, and it would take a lot of work to smooth them out. But since these box seams are lined up great, I decided to take the plunge and fill 'em in.

No, since this will be a daily driver, I'll be leaving the drip rail. I've heard stories from some who have removed theirs that when driving in rain, the door seals can't keep up with the excess water, and will leak. Might be true, might be different with me.....but I'm gonna leave mine.

if u have good rubber you shouldnt have a problem with leakage if u shave the rails. BUT no matter who u are, how good u are, or how u go about it, when u open the door IT WILL DRIP ON YOU.

That bed is looking sharp. It is going to look really nice when it is all done.

I have to admit I get a shower everytime I open my door after the rain. The water, it just sits there between the seal and door waiting for some one to open the door. Then BAM! unexpected sprinkln'.
