Steering wheel cracks

Post by Supermike »

Well, I think my plan to switch to a black interior just got accelerated. I was still clinging to the idea that I *might* be able to find a blue dashpad and still do my interior in blue. But after finding this, I don't think it's going to happen. Question is, how safe or unsafe is this?!

I'm thinking now I'll paint the column black, and maybe get a black repop steering wheel with the original style horn. Assuming I don't find any other surprises like this, I'll use a black dashpad and armrests, black carpet, and a black seat. Not 100% sure about the carpet. Maybe I'll work in some "platinum gray". Ideally I'd like to put in a leather seat with some turquoise trim and maybe have the camper special logo/emblem stitched onto the seat. I'll probably stick with light gray for the headliner so it doesn't get TOO dark. I don't want to feel like I'm driving the batmobile.

all of the old steering wheels did that that is safe. there is a metal steering wheel under neath that plastic stuff. or maybe its bakelite. that can be repaired though. you gring it out wider and fill it with the fill kit made for steering wheels or jb weld then sand and repaint.

Hmm... thanks! Of course, that doesn't sound as easy to me as it sounds to you... haha! Good to know it might be salvagable, though. Guess I'll have to keep blue under consideration.

you can ford a river or stream and get to the other side, if you dodge it you will not, and if you drive a chevy to the levee it will run dry and the music will die.

Yeah those cracks are small compared to some we have fixed with 1/8 wide cracks. Old steering wheels normally crack and seperate. Like said above several compaines sell repair kits for the wheels. No danger in repairing the wheel since like also said above it has metal reinforcement.

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

I understand that they make repair kits, but how do you get the design back in the plastic? I have a 72, and there are major cracks in it. Prolly half inch wide! But i want the face to look the same, with that plastic "wrinkle" texture. Anyone know how to get it right?

Just years of sitting out in the sun and cold and pushing and pulling on them. Those are just prone places to crack from pressure.

if you have real big 1/2 inch cracks maybe you should find a better wheel to restore. you have a big choice for the 3 spoke wheel, 61-70?or 71? in the trucks, falcon, fairlane etc. will all fit too.
