Re-key locks

I wasnt sure were to post this, but interior seemed as good a place as any.

Anyhow, I was wanting to re-key my outside locks. The PO replaced them a while ago, and it gets to be a pain to have to use two keys. I guess the biggest issue is that both keys look the same! I keep mixing them up. Anyhow, has anyone re-keyed there own locks, and where can i get new tumblers? I'm wanting to keep cost down, so i dont really want to take it to a lock smith. Let me know something guys, thanks in advance.

most locks have a set of five tumblers. the only place i know that you can get the tumblers are from a lock smith or thier suppliers. if you had some spare locks you could strip them out to get the spare tumblers that you need to key all you locks the same. you may need more than one set of locks though to make this work. it is a pain to do this and kind of tedius type of work. my local lock smith is prety reasonable as far as rekeying locks that i have taken to him. so i really do most of that stuff through him. i have rekeyed house locks using the method i described above and most of them turned out fine. except until i ran out of the correct lenght of tumblers then they are hard to make them work without wiggling the keys.

You can get new door locks/ignition switch from LMC.

I don't think that you can take the tumblers out,as they are crimped in.I know that the clip over the lock pins can be removed and move the pins and springs around to match the teeth on the key,but you really need to let a lock smith do this.I just went to the pull a part and found a 75 F100 that happened to have the key still in the ignition and got the locks out of the doors and of course the ignition switch.All you have to do is remove the "e" clip off the end and install your latch on the end of the door lock.The locks themselves are the same.

the round key are backwards for our locks. they won't slide into the lock.

I believe you can have one key cut with two different patterns, one on each side. One side for the door, one for the ignition. You'd have one key and then just need to know which side was up.

Yeah, i could do all that... but i still would prefer rekeying. Less trouble, i would think. And if i ever sold it, i wouldnt have to explain what does what.

By the time you locate parts if you can and spend the time to do it providing it can be done you would better off buying some new ones.

yeah. I just called my local locksmith and he said he would re-key the ignition to match the doors for about $12. I'm gonna go that route for now. I still like the challenge. But i've got too many other things to do on this truck. I just thought i would ask you guys and see if anyone had ever done it. If it was easy i was going to do it. Anyhow, thanks for all the help.
