Question on Column shift manual

Post by chewwy dog »

I have 3 ford trucks 2 for parts one has a 3 speed manual tranny the other has an automatic and the other has a four speed manual tranny I was wondering if I could make the 4 speed tranny work with the 3 in the tree column shift and if anyone has heard of this before the 4 speed is connected to a transfer case so just switching the tranny wort work :fr: If anyone has any info on this I would really appreciate it thanks

first off welcome, where you from here in canada? just to clarify your question, you want to shift a 4 speed trans with a 3 speed column shifter? ive never heard of that before, i imagine it could be done but you would have no 4th gear either that or reverse

Hey guys my name is Dave I live in a small town called Nobleford nice to meet you guys Im not gay so if your not a female firefighter i guess im out of luck besides im happily married lol anyways this seems to be quite a website I have a 1973 ford f-250 it has a 352 cu in motor with four speed tranny I love this truck oh by the way it has the body style from the previous models so i dont throw you off. I was looking for an old truck that i could fix up and ive always been a ford guy I also have a 68 and a 71 2wd truck for parts between the three i can do lots. when I bought the truck the wireing was poor but the drive train is great the guy i bought it off of rebuilt the 352 motor so its got like 3000 miles on it and nothing at all leaks. I was kind of worried about not having oil in my drivetrain so i checked it out and everything is up to snuff I am planning to try and make this beast a column shift like the old 3 in the tree so im not beating the old lady up with the shifter and i think it would be real cool aswell I also have a powerdyne supercharger that i would like to throw on it aswell but im not mr mechanic i mean i can do some things and i have lots of time to do it but anyways thats me how are you guys doing? talk to ya later Dave

im doin good dave, where is nobleford? the 4 speed on the column would be cool, i imagine there is someway you can pull it off with some fabrication. 67 merc is a girl, and if im not mistaken shes married to a firefighter :dk: thats just her signature on the bottom of that post, every post has that on it thats she writes. it sounds like you got a cool project there, you should post some pics. everyone like pictures, its kinda like feeding the trolls. but you have a good one hopefully someone here can help you figger out how to accomplish the 4 on the tree project :fr:

I seriously doubt you'd be able to make a 3-spd column work with a 4-spd transmission. While nothing's impossible, the time and money you'd spend trying to do it wouldn't be worth it. If your wife's going to be driving the truck and doesn't like the standard 4-spd shifter, then drop an automatic in it and be done with it. Just my :2cents:

The truck 4-spd transmission shifter goes into the top of the transmission anyway, so that transmission just plain wouldn't work. You'd have to get a car-type 4-spd Toploader with side linkage. But I'm telling you, don't waste your time and money.

OMG. A Canuck thread. :)

That should be quite interesting conversion. You could add an extra
lever for reverse.
