Ignition Setup
What is a good ignition setup to run if I want all new parts? I don't know anything hardly about ignition systems. But, would I get a Coil/Distributor/Ignition Box, everything or what? Do I need an ignition box, or would it Help anything? I see people add them as an upgrade, but is that only with a larger motor?
I know you guys like the pertronix I believe, where can I look at these/find them online? I would like to look at them before buying one. Are they hard to wire up? I see some guys having trouble with certain things on them. Any help is appreciated.
Also, if I don't NEED an ignition box, I can upgrade later correct, and add one on if I feel like it?

You can get all the parts at Autozone to make it a duraspark
for pretty reasonable. The harness I don't know if you can get
them new anymore. Pretty easy to make one though.

thats a little more than I am willing to spend right now.spartman wrote:I don't think I will be getting a dizzy from them.
They want 265 bucks plus shipping for my 6 cyl.
I don't have that kinda money left anymore, I am married.
I really want something new because it will really clean up the engine I think. The stock dizzy is um....dirty beyond fixing I believe. I will tear it down and sand it a little. See if I can get some chrome paint or something like that on it before I got out spending loads of money on a full new setup though.

will look into that kid. sounds like my price range hahaha.kid wrote:i drop an Accel Point Eliminator kit in for 69 dollars, time it and drive away. 3 wires no hassle.
also, what coil and all should i run? I am thinkin of running all MSD stuff just because I like the company and know they are quality products.
The coil can go from stock to the top of the line like the Accel 14001 Super Coil. Just remember the ballast resistors that the coils say they need is in addition to your built in ballast resistor.
In the world of dizzys (aftermarket) Accel was the first with points and dizzy setups Mallory was mainly into magnetos until 69. Accel had the full line and was made to support the factory dizzys first. Hell every engine could get dual point dizzys from the factory in the 60s so no one saw a profit in making dizzys until the early 70s. The racers wanted points as the factory went electronic so then Mallory and Accel built some really nice units with roller bearing shafts and dual points with mechanical tach drives. I was totally into Accel for one reason.
Ever crack a cap? I broke one from number 6 to 7 (6,3,7) a arc shaped break that reached up to an inch of number 3s spark tower and back down. No spare cap and a race had to be won. We taped the bottom of the cap to keep it from shifting. and raced 9 more runs and won every one of them. Try that with most caps.
Accel point eliminator.

re: Ignition Setup
Alright, I think I am just going stock, points and all. These are the links I am looking at, but not sure what I should do coil wise. 45-55 dollars for a coil???
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... ACC-140205 <--ACCEL Coil, but says it needs a different ballast resistor to run this?
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... 12106-A302 <---Cap and Rotor, FRP Parts.
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... MP-FD8183V <--points. Is this all I need for points?
I have never worked on a points distributor and I hear you have to gap the points or something, so that it will run right. If I go into autozone, or o'reilleys will they know what all to give me if I ask them for it? I don't plan on doing anything like the gear or anything like that, just the basic internals. This should leave me enough money for alternator parts, belt , new water pump, and valve covers.

re: Ignition Setup
Gap at .018. Put a little lube, grease on the cam.
The breaker plates get loose. Ck. it by trying to wiggle
it. Is it loose? Makes a difference. Same with the bushings that
keep the shaft straight. I still run "points". If I can, I will!

Coil
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... toview=sku
.017 on the points for all Ford V8s. The coil needs a total of 1.35 ohms and the Ford pink wire is .6 to .7 Ohms so you need a .7 or .65 ballast resistor in line with your wire.
Points and condenser. Your link was points only.

Your cap choice is fine but you only need that style for very high voltage coils. under 45,000Vs a regular cap will be fine.

In your first post you said you know nothing about ignition well why go backwards and have to learn the hassle of points. Is it your goal to be under the hood doing maintenance every couple of months or be driving the truck? Is learning the correct feel for point pressure with a feeler gauge and all the other hassles of points which need changing fairly often something you want to learn. Every plug change is a points change by the book. Every-time the truck gets a little weird you will need to look at the points.
