Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Hey Guys...
This evening I was looking into installing the intermitant wiper switches in "Olde Skool". I am going to be able to install them where the stock switches are.
I searched the tech sheets on this and am not sure which wires need to be hooked up to make the wipers work.
I installed one in my '68 CS and it works great.
Each switch on Olde Skool only has 4 wires. The wires plug directly into sockets on the switch itself.
While at the wrecking yard I picked up an extra stock switch, wires and the wire sockets, thinging that they would help me hook the intermittant switch up. The pickup switch has 8 wires... I'm not sure which wires do what, so I'm not sure how to make the conversion.
Thanks Guys...

re: Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Hey Kaptn,
I’m looking at this wire diagram that Keith has on the tech page http://www.fordification.com/images/sch ... 9truck.gif and I know that you said the washer was a separate switch on your old school, so that eliminates (941 and 296) as this is the power in and out for the washer.
So… now the question I have is if you only have 4 wires going to your old switch are your wipers in Old School auto return to park the wipers? Or do you have to turn them off just right to park them? If this is the case then the intermittent wiper switch won’t work…
I’m not 100% sure but I think that 28 and 63 are for the auto park function… Then 58 is Low speed and 56 is High speed. 57 is ground and 297 is power for the wipers…
Hope this helps...

re: Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Hey Thunderfoot...
I'm nearly 100% positive that the wiper switches on Olde Skool have "park" as I don't have to shut it off at any particular place for the wipers to return to the "home" position.
There are 4 wires going to each switch... I will check the wire colors when I get home and get back to you on that.
I am making a chart listing for each switch with circuit number / function and wire color, which should allow me to convert one to the other.
I have wiring diagrams for the '68 F-100-350 and the '68 F/B-500.
It is interesting, that the switch harness I pulled from the '69 Ranger has wire colors that aren't listed on either diagram. One wire is lime green the other is solid Orange. Both wires appear to be associated with the washer pump.
I was really confused by one wire. According to the printed diagram I have, it appears to go to the heater switch... I can't for the life of me figure out what they would have in common.
I appreciate your help and input on this.
Take care,
KaptnKAOS

Ah, I see what you’re after… I’m looking at some other diagrams off the site now to figure some more out.
I’ve got a factory service wire manual at home for my 69, if I can find where I put the darn thing, I’ll look tonight there also.
Not sure on the wire to the heater I would have to see that diagram…
Let me know what you find on colors tonight and I’ll help with what I can, gives me a chance to use my electronic degree for something.

Hey Thunderfoot...
According to the diagram that came with the bus the four wires going to each switch are :
L. blue hot from switch panel
Red hot from motor
Green run from motor
Black park from motor
These are word for word from the diagram
Not sure what they mean about "from motor" would they not be power feeds to the motor...
Thanks again...

re: Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Hey Thunderfoot...
Here's what I have so far, hope it makes sence...
So far, it just been a pain... it seems that what I actually have in my hands don't quite match up to the diagrams... there are wires on the bump switches that aren't on the diagram.
The wire colors on the intermittent switch don't match with the diagram either.
When I plug the harness side plug into the intermittent switch plug, holding the plug so flat portion so it faces to the left.
the colors match up as follows starting from the bottom of the I-switch listed first
Black/green stripe --> Orange /white stripe
Red --> Red
white -->white
Black /purple stripe --> black
dark blue /orange stripe / Lt blue
black / white strip -->lime green
empty space --> two wires = black & orange
What I'm trying to do is wire a wiper switch wire harness plug from a bump pickup onto the existing bus wiring so it can be plugged into the new intermittent switch.
This what I have so far. Hopfully this will make some sence. I am trying to determine the function of each wire so I know which ones need to be connected together to make this thing work.
Wiper wiring
Wire Color / Circuit / Function
Bus
L. blue = hot from switch panel
Red = hot from motor
Green = run from motor
Black = park from motor
Pickup switch / diagram
Black 950 heater switch

Black #2 951 washer pump
Blue 56 low to wiper motor
White 58 to wiper motor
Red/black 63 to wiper motor not on switch

F500-750 diagram
Yellow 21 ign ground
Blue 56 low speed
White 58 high speed
Red / black 63 ? goes to w. motor / not sure of function
Black / green 297 A&B hot from ign connects to 763
Orange / white 763 hot from ign 297 A&B
Black 615 park
79 switch (6 wires)
Black / white
Black / green
Red
Blue / orange
White
Black / pink (red ?)
79 diagram
Blue 56 motor high
White / orange 58 motor low

Green / black 951 950 Wt/bk-->296 R-->941 Bk/wt-->951Gr/bk= hot to washer
Black 57 washer ground / from pump
I am still trying to figure the diagrams out, but I seem to be getting a little closer all the time...
Thanks for your help...

Hey there Allan,
This is what I have figured up just before you sent the last info… I’ll look at your latest info some more to see what else there is needed. I’m getting cross eyed this late.
I do have one question down below on if your wipers are single speed or not?
On the “From Motorâ€Â

re: Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Hey Thunderfoot...
Thank you for your patience trying to help muddle through this...
I do pretty good when things match up like they're supposed to...
But when I am holding the pice in my hands loooking at it and the wiring diagram says something else... my brain just sorta short circuits.
I have a complete wiring diagram set for '68 Ford trucks F-100 - F700 (750?) so far, they don't seem to be very accurate, especially when I have the piece in my hand looking at it and the wire colors don't even match... wwwwwuuuuzzzzuuuupppp wit dat?
I wuz looking at the intermittent wiper switch (IWS) itself and the wire colors on it don't match the diagram either... I'm pretty sure that I got the IWS outta a 79 Bronco... according to the tech pages it should still work even if it is a newer one.
I honestly can't remember if the bus has two speeds of not. I have only driven it once, (the day I drover 'er home), and it was raining. I just remember it being a pain in the arse to flip the wipers on and off, especially since there are two differant switches, one for each side.
Having just done the upgrade on my '68 CS I figured it would be a pretty easy upgrade to do on the bus as well. I just sorta assumed that I would just plug in like the pickup. I didn't know until I went to do it that that was not the case... grrrrr
I'll check to see if there is more than one speed on the bus during the next couple of days...
Right now, I am at work and better get going...
Thanks again...

re: Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Happy 4th of July Kaptn,
To bad you had to work today…
No problem on the help
I'm pretty sure that you only have one speed, but let me know if it is differant...
Here is a picture of the plug in the orientation you described with the functions of each connection. The colors not matching is no big deal, where they came from different rigs... (see Note below on wiper pump)
From your description, this is how I would connect them all.
Black/green stripe --> Orange /white stripe --> L. Blue (hot) from Switch Panel
Red --> Red --> Red (hot) from motor
White --> White --> Green (run) from motor (Low speed control)
Black /purple stripe --> Black --> Black (park) from motor
Dark Blue/orange stripe --> Lt blue --> (Not used for your application) (High speed control)
Black/white stripe --> Lime green --> (Power for washer Pump) “See Note Belowâ€Â

re: Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Hey Thunderfoot...
It wasn't to bad working on the 4th... it was actually kinda nice.
I was able to get alot more done because the phones weren't ringing off the hook.
I work at an inpatient drug and alcohol treatment program so we are "open" 24/7/365. We don't have "normal" holidays off unless we choose to take them off. We get 14 paid holidays per year to use pretty much when ever we want. We can also use them in increments if we want to... sometimes I'll just use a couple of hours to leave early if I want to... so it is pretty cool. I chose to work the 4th because I was goin' to a big bbq and fireworks show at a friends, it didn't start until 7pm and I knew it wuz gonna go late so I took today and friday off for my "holiday" giving me a 4 day weekend. I got to sleep in late today... which was a whole lot better than having to work this morning.
By working the 4th I was able to get everything I needed to get done for thursday and friday... now when I go back on monday I won't have to play catch up either.
Well... I spent some time with Olde Skool today... and found out a couple of things. She does in fact have 2 speed wipers. There are two light blue wires coming from the bus panel, one to each switch. Each wiper motor has 3 wires coming from it. Red, Black/red stripe, and Green/black stripe.
Since there are two separate switches, I am just going to keep the washer pump separate like it is. (KISS) That's pretty straight forward.. power to the switch, power from the switch to the pump and ground from the pump. So far, I have found that it is much easier to start from scratch, than it is to figure out what the they go going on. Fortunately the majority of the wiring is unmolested and the cabin wiring is pretty straight forward... it's when I run into snags like not having the Bluebird bus wiring diagram that makes things confusing...
Having diagrams that don't match what I see don't help a lot either
I did spend a good part of the day preping the cabin for paint... since I had it partially dismantled any way, I just took the rest of the stuff off and did some sanding and taping...
I shot some satin black an the bottom half of the cabin.. the part that is behind the "dash" (if you could call it that) The dash pieces themselves are going to be a sky blue... it's lookin' pretty good so far..
II gotta get going.. I have to be some where in 3 minutes... I wasn't paying attention to the time.
Take and thanks again...

Yep, I think you’re going to have to do some experimenting / checking out of the wiper motor to figure out "what is doing what"… I didn’t think about the bus part being third party built “Bluebirdâ€Â

re: Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Hey Thunderfoot...
Yeah, it's the Bluebird thing that is the kink in the hose. Otherwise this thing would just plug in just like the pickups do.
I thought we had it figured out with the single speed configuration.
The only thing I can figure is that there must be a single wire for each function on the bus switch. The IWS actually only has 6 wires going to the plug from the black controller box.
If one goes to the washer pump that leaves 5...
this might sound like a dumb question
If the red wire is a power wire coming from the motor to the switch...
how does the power get to the wiper motor?
Another thought, could one wire control both speed functions if there was some kind of resistance within the switch in one position and not the other? If that is possible, then perhaps I could hook both the low and high speed control wires on the IWS to the Green "run" wire.
Tomorrow, I'm gonna try something...
I'm gonna hook the passenger side motor back up and try pulling the green run wire and see what happens when I change positions on the switch... that will at least tell me if both speeds are controlled by a single wire...
I'll let ya know what happens...
take care...

re: Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Hey Thunderfoot...
I tried every sorta wiring connection we talked about.
It boiled down to this... blue > blue
black/red > black
red > red
green/black > white
Go figure that the only thing that worked was hooking the like colors together.
If I hooked up the Orange/white power wire. It would not turn off, so there was constant power. I ended up only using the four main wires on the bump switch. I only have one speed now. There must be something inside the original switches that makes them work differant than the bump switches. One of the original switches was bad and needed replaced anyway. I had to drill a couple of small top center holes to use the bump style wiper swtch benzels. They look so much better than the orginal sticker that was on there. I posted a couple of new pics on today's Olde Skool update.
Thanks again for all your help. It would have been really cool if the IWS had of worked. There has to be some sorta of reastat that could work to adjust the speed... like a household light dimmer or ceiling fan switch.
Take care...

re: Intermittant wiper wiring ???
Hey Kaptn!
From this info I think you may still be able to use the IMW switch I just need some more info from you as now I’m a little confused on the colors of the wires you have on which connectors… sorry...
If you look at the following picture, can you tell me what color wires go to what number on the location of the connectors for the "IMWS connectorâ€Â
