f600 gauge swap question

Post by jcolville »

I know there is something on this someplace but I can't seem to find it....I have an f600 cluster and the connector is different than the one on my 72...the wire colors seem to be the same, can I just hook them up wire for wire? I have gauges in my old one, not idiot lights.

Hey JC...

I think you can...
I think if you remove the harness plug from your original gauge cluster and swap conectors, the f600 cluster will plug and play...
You should be able to gently pull the wire out of each of the plug sockets and put them in the other connector one by one until you have the whole connector switched over...
I don't think you will need to cut any wires...
I have never done this before, so please make sure I haven't given you the wrong info before tearing anything a part...
It might depend on the year of each... but I do think that's all you will need to do.

Good luck...

Don't know about the colors matching, prolly have to find both diagrams and compare. You can't just pull the wires out of the connectors, they have to be unlatched, then can be pulled out. Most times a ice pick or something similar will work for a unlatching tool.

Yup, wire for wire. There is one wire that's different. If my memory serves me correctly (witch it doesn't always do), brown goes to purple. Don't worry though, it's the only two wires that don't match, so you'll know which ones they are.

To get the conector appart you can get the tool from any auto parts store. I got the tool to do my turn signal switch. I have also used a short section of un-flared brake line (3/16").

sweet! thanks gents!!..I may just go back to the bone yard and get the connector out of the f600 to make it look all nice. I hade the gauge bezel powder coated and mounted a nice tach in the right side of the bezel. I also had the radio bezel powder coated but it looks kinda odd with the heater controls having the chrome around the edge, I'll prolly have to take that out now and get that done or get another radio bezel and have them just powder coat the black and not the chrome outside edge. If anyone wants me to post a pic of the cluster let me know and I will.

OK ..I got the cluster all in, wireing was easy. 71longbed was right about the two wires, purple and brown. I did have a black wire with a green strip too but the connector didn't have it going anyplace. I'll get some pics of it for ya.

How do you like it? I love mine, it's much easier to read as your driving. I have one for my F350 also, but I'm still waiting for my buddy to weld up a hole drilled in it for a toggle switch. I should bug him about it. :P
Lets see those pictures. :D
