Piecemeal repair or new harness?

Post by Steve P »

Hey everybody. I recently bought my bump and was trying to figure out some wiring issues (laid out here, where I got several helpful responses).

I finally got under the dash and under the truck to find out that the PO had really done a number on some of the wiring. For one thing, he had attached a new run of wire to the brake switch (instead of the wire that originally connected to the emergency flasher), and ran that all the way to the back of the truck, basically cutting off the original wiring from the rear taillights. It looks like the reason he did this was to put in a wiring harness for a trailer, but some of the original wiring in the back was in pretty bad shape, so he may have just gotten frustrated.

Given that I would have to reconnect the old wiring if I took out his fix and removed the trailer harness (and that I'm not too sure about the condition of the old wiring), does it make more sense to try to get it all back together or to put in a new harness?

Thanks, Steve

I would go for a new harness.

i think i would run all new wire from the plugs by the firewall on back to the tail lights. keeping the exsisting plugs or findng new ones that would connect to the rest of the harness. get rid of what he rigged in there and do it right.
