License Plate Light

Post by old_mare »

I finally got the Old Mare registered the other day so she has plates on her for the first time in about 7 years!

Where was the license plate originally mounted? I can't seem to find any logical place. If it was on the tailgate, mine is long gone. Is there a light anywhere? I don't think I can drive my truck at night unless there is a light projecting on the plate.

Hey old_mare...

If yer truck has a step bumper it's goes on the left side.
The metal tab in front of the plate protects the license plate light.

I must have a custom (*ahem* crappy *ahem*) bumper because mine looks nothing like any photos I have seen yet. Here's a photo...

I just attached the plate with a screw to one of the screw holes for a reflector. It works for day driving but there is no apparent hookup for a plate light. Might have to work something out...

Thanks though.

yeah.. Old Mare...

I've not seen one like that either...
There should be a female plug on yer tail light harness where the LP light connects to the harness...
I just replaced the one on my '68 CS last Sat.

Hey Kap'n... what's that license plate light look like, and how/where does it mount on the flip side of that tab? You and I have the exact same bumper, except mine has a reese hitch welded to it underneath. Looks original, too...

I got to playing at work today and found some sheet metal :D

I drilled a few holes and mounted my plate then I cut and bent up a piece to mount a light to until I get a new rear bumper. I have to find a light to use, don't know exactly how its gonna work yet. I put my new Snap On test light to work and found what used to be the plate light wires so that makes it easier.

Will post pics tomorrow after work.

Hey Supermike...

It mounts flat to the top of the bumper.
The rectangle that sticks up is part of the bumper top that was cut on three sides and bent vertical creating a retangular hole.
The light sits in the hole behind the vertical piece to protect the glass cover.
The L.plate light is 3 peices, the base with the light socket, a rectagular metal frame piece and a frosted glass cover. The screws go threw the frame piece and the base piece, sandwiching the glass cover in between.
If it's decent tomorrow, I'll try to get a couple pics of it.
I knew mine was bad and had drilled the socket out and rigged up a smaller plug in style socket in the old houseing until I could find a stock style replacement.
I think I payed something like $5.00 for an NOS one on ebay...

Ford trucks also didn't always come with a bumper from the factory and had a license plate hanger on them. Most of the trucks that did come with a bumper had (Barden Bumpers) installed on them, Barden is the name of the manufacturer & supplier for rear Ford truck bumpers in the 60's and 70's.

Thanks... I'd definitely like to see the picture, as my bumper is configured the exact same way. I haven't been using that plate mounting location, though, because our plates today BARELY fit the gap between the tailgate and bed without bending the plate. It seems that location was almost configured for the plates that were "half-height".

I also have plate mounting location in the center, right in front of and above the hitch, that works out better, but I may try to use the other location if I can light it.

Wow... thanks Kap'n! I'll have to keep my eye open for one of those! I don't know that I've ever seen that type, but that's exactly what I need! I looked last night, and noticed even the screw holes where there to hold it in place.

If you see another one, let me know!

I will SuperMike...

It was funny (like in weird) I was the opening bidder on it (NOS in the box) no bid against me so I got it for $5.00 plus the ride...
I wish that would happen everytime I biddded on something... :D
I removed my old one and this one just plugged right into the harness.
The hardest part was drilling out the screws that had rusted in solid.
The heads tore off trying to unscrew them.

Kap'n,

Can you tell me what the part number is on the frame of that light? I'm finding lots on ebay, such as the following one from Carpenter:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0238827324

It seems this style light assembly was used for most 1964-72 Ford Full-sized cars, the 1965-69 Fairlane, and the 1964-70 Falcon.

The difference is, some of them have funky mounting brackets and look to be slightly different, whereas others, like the one from Carpenter, looks like they'd work except they have some kind of shield thing by the glass, which if mounted on the bump would maybe block the light from hitting the plate.

Here's the searchs I used:

http://search.ebay.com/Ford-license-pla ... fQQsconfZ1

Can anyone tell me where I can find the ORIGINAL part number for this light assembly? For example, "C4AZ-13550-A", though that would be a part for a '64.

I see "drawings" of this part in the NPD catalog and others, but can't find the part # anywhere!
