Emerg brake switch?

Post by 6T7Merc »

Can anyone show me a picture of the emergency brake switch which turns on the small circular 'brake' light in the dash?
Thanks.

That light is actually actuated by a differential switch located in your brake distribution block (drum/drum) or your proportioning valve (disc/drum)

And when it comes on is bad thing means you have lost 1/2 your brakes.

When it comes on it means you have an UNBALANCED condition in your brake system. It could mean that you have developed a leak somewhere (in a line, hose, wheel cylinder), or your master cylinder is pushing more fluid to one side than the other (going bad) or you have improperly bled your brakes and there is more pressure in the front than the back (or vice-versa).

I've been driving around with my light on for a while now!! When I finally checked the bulb about 6 to 8 months ago I found the bulb was blown. I replaced the bulb, and what did I find? Exactly what I figured would blow the bulb. The light is on all the time. Big deal! My brakes work fine, so far, and one day I'll take the time to balance my brake system (probably when I put my 3L50 posi BumpSide rear-end in the truck).

Check your truck over real good for leaks If you don't find any I believe there is something on this site that tells you how to balance the brake system out by bleeding the system a bit to the front or the back.

I did this on a 1967 Mustang I had the same problem with many years ago and the light went out in the Mustang. It would come on a bit at times and then go back off.
Too many projects, too little time, but.. lovin' it!

:yt: my dad and i went through the horror of the brake light being on and it wasnt fun for my dad fixing it. we found that the little piston inside the cylinder thingy in the proportioning valve was jammed stuck :)

You guys are forgetting there is another dash light for when the e-brake is on.
I'll see if I can get a pic of the switch tomorrow.

It's on my '69, I don't know if it was part of an option package or related to the year. I'll post a pic of the light in a minute.
