Ignition switch wiring; which color does what?

Post by F100builder »

Well, I'm one ignition switch and headlight switch away from firing my '69 with an all new wiring harness. It's an aftermarket harness that is GM color coded which I usually have no problem with. I'm using the original switches and I know which wire is which on the new harness but I'm having trouble identifying the wires exiting the back of the Ford switch (I want to splice the new harness into the pigtails I left on the switch's plug). I have a wiring diagram but it's not helping. I basically need to know which is PWR, ACC., Start, and ON. I'm going to look at the schematic again and see if I can decipher it. I just don't want blown fuses or a runaway starter!

Thanks in advance for any help!
Patrick

should be

Black/yellow = B+

Black = ignition

Brown/black = accessory

red/blue = start signal.

if this a gm based harness, Black /yellow should go to a large red wire, Black should be connected to orange AND pink. Brown black to brown. red/blue to purple.

and as always,
:2cents:

if ya need a diagram, shoot me a PM.
As a metter of fact, i AM trying to keep up with the Jones'

Isnt the yellow wire on a GM switch for the starter?

At least anything from 2000 and older should be.

Also you forgot the black/red wire for acc/run

I figured it out. I stayed up late and traced it all out and cross referenced both wiring diagrams. This chart from the site helped a lot.

I finished the ignition and lights up this morning and WHOA!!! Has anyone heard a 390 through open full length headers lately? It's totally obnoxious!!! I love it! I will be putting some 40 series Flowmasters on after about 2-3 feet of straight pipe. I took 'er for a quick spin around the block and romped on it a few times. What a nasty sound! I'm SOOOOO tired and sore! I've worked a solid 3 days (35+ hours) and finally got it roaring. I'll be posting a link to a video hopefully some time this weekend in the thread asking for exhaust sound clips. I'm wanting to do a before (mufflers) and after. Anyway, thanks for the responses guys!

BTW, it's as follows...

yellow (12 or 14 ga?) = ignition power
black w/ green stripe (12 or 14 ga?) = accessory
red w/ yellow stripe & pink = ignition 'ON'
red w/ blue stripe = starter relay
