Door panels....take me to school.

Post by fitzwell »

Got to looking at what i have available for the'68 yesterday...nothing good. I want to keep the existing door handles on the inside, the window cranks are no big deal, i just need to know ......

what will interchange from 68 up, and is there a simple, all steel panel that was ever used?

i have a plan............

From what I've seen there is a difference between '69 and '71 with regards to the holes on the door itself. The '69 had the metal trim ring and holes for it's clips and the '71 didn't. Beyond that I don't know.

I believe that any 68-72 panel will interchange. The ones with the metal trim will have extra holes compared to the ones without. This isn't year related though. It has to do with the packages such as Ranger, Ranger XLT, Custom, and Sport Custom. The plain panels for plain jane trucks is solid steel with molded ridges. Hope this gives you a good idea.

Keep in mind guys, some had the vinyl covered fiberboard. Mostly XLT Rangers though. Some even had woodgrain on those panels.

427...that's basically the panel i'm looking for. Going to upholster over it, so the trim isn't necessary (at least for what i have planned

thanks guys :fr:

well some had a hard vinyl with woodgrain through the middle, and others had a vinyl like material with a vertical wood grain in the ranger xlts. they are quite a few different panels for these trucks from the factory.

Those vinyl panels are on top of the steel door panel.

I have found differences based on the panel regarding the holes drilled in the door. My 69 metal panel with a vinyl covering and wood grain would not fit on the 71 doors currently on my truck that had the 71 vinyl panel.
However I believe that if the holes were drilled differently it would fit. THe panels are both the same size but the 71 is vinyl only with no metal behind it.

My '68 CS came with metal ones with the metal chrome trim.
My '71 CS came with the fiberboard panels covered with black vinyl with plasitichome trim...

I'm pretty sure that that it depends on which trim package you have, and what was ordered by the dealer / original purchaser.
Based on observation it seems that...
The base model got plain metal panels w/o trim,
The custom cab got metal panels w/ metal chrome trim
The Ranger and Ranger XLT models got various styles of vinyl covered w/or w/o wood paneling.
I think the '70 and newer models had mostly the vinyl ones in the Custom Cab packages regardless of the model...
Again, let me state that this assumption is based on observation...
I've not been able to find any documentation on this subject...

weather it had vinyl or plastic or wood depending on model, i believe it still had a steel panel under the vinyl or plastic and it should be body color.
i didnt like the after market plastic ones from n.p.d. so i found a set of the metal ones and painted them the color of the plastic ones :2cents:
