Inside AC unit options

Post by flyboy2610 »

AS if trying to decide how to mount the compressor wasn't bad enough, I need to choose which inside unit to use.
The shorter, wood grained unit came out an F350 from the south U-Pull-It in Omaha.
The longer black unit is an Old Air Products unit that I bought two years ago, but haven't gotten around to using.
The wood grained unit has a working fan, but that's all i know for sure. It would take a good bit of painting and work to make it look nice. It also has a quarter sized hole in the top of the case.
The Old Air unit is, as i said, brand new and is R-134a compatible, something which the older unit may not be.
The Old Air unit also has a duct for over by the drivers door, which is a nice thing to have.

If it were me, I would do whatever repairs were required on the Ford Unit because it is nice and compact and more original. I'm a purist though but I would keep the Old Air Unit for a "spare" for when R-12 is gone, (almost gone now according to the price of it). Now that I've said that, the most practical all around would be to use the Old Air Unit and fill it with R-134a. That would be "new" and modern and probably more trouble free over the long haul...... Oh Dear, what to do? Two A/C units and only one truck.....Dear, dear, dear..........

Hard to say, I like the original since it's not as bulky, but I'm sure the better result would be the one that has the vent on the driver's side.

Both are aftermarket dealer install types / stying (not factory). I would probably go with the newer Old Air setup myself... :2cents:

I would use the modern old air unit, probably much less headaches in the long run.

My great aunt and uncle got one of those dealer installed in their 72 F100. It worked for about a year. They still have it and I want it real bad to fix and use, but their sons won't let it go. The truck sits outside rotting away. :x :x :x :x :x

I would go with the new unit. Who cares about leg room? Aren't you going to be on the drivers side?

the old air unit looks old fashioned enough to fit in with the style of our trucks. I'd go with that.

I think I probably will wind up going with the Old Air unit.
It's designed to run on R-134a, so I wouldn't have to change anything there.
I think I'll hold onto the other unit, though, until i get everything installed. Just in case I change my mind.

I would hook them up to a battery and then use the one that blows the hardest. Volume of air flow is what gets you cool. Unless you are just installing it for "looks" why not install the one that does the best job. Dang! I hate it when someone suggest using logic to come to a decision!
