York AC compressor bearings

Post by flyboy2610 »

I seem to recall reading something about compressor bearings in a remanufactured compressor being destroyed by R134a.
I could be wrong about that, but IIRC the gist of it was that the bearing material wasn't compatible with the PAG oil used in an R134a system.
I should think, though, that reman units would have compatible bearings by this time.
Could someone who knows et me straight on this?
I have a remanufactured York compressor I plan to use, but don't want it to self destruct its bearings.
Help? :?

Yes,

It should be OK.

Back when 134A was first introduced and we all got our licenses it was a problem.
The problem lay in the "mixability" of the existing R-12 mineral oil with the newer 134A synthetic oils, (pag, ester, etc.).
We were taught that retrofit's needed 90% of the mineral oil removed when going to 134A to prevent this.
If it's never had 12 in it, you're good to go.

Great!
Thanks, Jeff, for the info!
It's a rebuilt unit, still in the box, so I guess I won't worry about it.
