My instrument cluster idea

Post by spartman »

what do you guys think about this for my 67?

The cluster is out of a 96 Taurus with the six, and since I have a six the tach would/should work just fine.

The only thing I am worried about is the speedo. This speedo has no cable it needs a speed sensor from the tranny.

I have been doing some research on the motorcraft website and think I can make one either off of an older Taurus or off of a Crown Vic work.

Will keep you posted on the results as they come in.

The fuel and temperature gauges will be a challenge because the senders use a different ohmic range plus they work backwards, more ohms reads higher not lower.

According to the testing data I obtained from Mitchel, and I have tested the cluster to make sure it works is that:

1) the temp sensor should read cold with 74 ohms of resistance and should
read hot with 9.7 ohms of resistance.

2) The fuel gauge should read empty with 22 ohms of resistance and should
read full with 145 ohms of resistance.

I was thinking that the fuel should not be a problem since I am going to use a different tank than the stock in cab one, and the temp sensor should be easily adaptable from a taurus to my truck.

Might be getting in a little deep with this but I have more time than money and suffer from an overactive imagination. :D

Really? I thought the temp. range was something like 19 to 250 ohms?

At least that's what the book said.

74 ohms gauge should read cold, 9.7 gauge should read hot.

This test is supposed to be done with the correct FORD tester unit #014-R1063. I just used resistors and a battery.

12 volt that is out of a UPS.

Hmmm ok, as long as it all checks out.

I once had all this information on the gauge requirements for cars and trucks from the '50's thru the '90's but darn if I know where it is. Am just going from memory nowadays. :hmm:

No problem.

You did have me wondering for a moment though.

Do you happen to know what the range of the temp senders in a 67 should be?

That I know.

10 ohms = H

73 ohms = C

22.8 ohms = midrange

If you happen to get a spare wiring harness while you are there let me know.

Also check to see what type of speed sensor is on a 96 Taurus while you are at it, if you could?

PLEASE :D

It would be the ones under the dash that hookup to the cluster itself.

Sorry about the late reply, I have been hijacked by the family and forced on a vacation.

Just an update on the cluster.

Everything works on the old girl.

I found a speed sensor from a 94 taurus and it works like a charm.

When I get the leak in the tranny fixed and add the kickdown cable ( I am using an AOD) I will report on how accruate the spedo is.
