i have a 72 parts truck that had those on it and it was a ranger. i think they stopped in 71 using the steel panels but im not sure. i sold these but heres a pic of them. but it could be the style of them that is the difference.

My Explorer Special Custom had them! I was trying to find them new but no one makes them. All the shops I went to was not able to put that lil chrome strip on the panels so I went with NPD and got the all Black Panels.

What Ford called the Explorer Special was just a mid-year price break on putting Ranger/Ranger XLT options on the lower trim levels. For example, you could get Ranger trim on a Sport Custom...essentially getting a Ranger at a Sport Custom price. There are no Explorer-only pieces, except of course the emblems.

The '72 model year was the only year that actually had an external Explorer emblem, mounted on the rear of the bed. On earlier trucks, you might have an Explorer glovebox emblem, but then again you might not.

Edit: The one thing that Explorers had that no other truck had was the plaid upholstery....forgot about that. They also were painted one of several colors not typically available on other models.

First of all, why don't you tell us what year this truck is, since things did change year to year? Second, why not attach a picture or two...it would allow more precise answering of your question(s) without guessing on our part.

i think sport custom has five as well as ranger and maybe explorer. it depends on the pattern of the holes. sport custom may even have six holes. custom will have three or four holes. when you get back from i raq post some pics of all this stuff and we can tell you more.
