3G upgrade question

Post by usaimages »

Just need a quick answer. I am going to upgrade my alt to a 3G unit. I have a 72 F100 with a 390 engine and stock alt with the V groove pulley. I have read about all of the sticky and posts about it, but I want to be sure before I buy the alt.
From what I have read and understand, a 3G alt with an 8.25 pivot mount should be a direct bolt on. I know I will have to change the wiring.
Is this correct, or have I missed something?
Thanks.
The one I'm looking at comes from a 97 Windstar with a 3.8 engine.

From what I have read that is correct, I want to do the same thing but for now need to figure out how to wire up my existing alt because the po had hacked up the harness. good luck on the swap...

It's charging!!!! After not really knowing if the VR was gonna work and if that field relay thingy worked (by the way, what is the field relay?) I used the wiring diagram made possible by this site and wired up the alternator and it was charging at 14.3 volts... now to figure out what the cut wires go to that are part of the wire loom? and then on to the tail lights that are in bad need of some help. and I do apologize for :hj: I'm just excited to have finished one more thing today...
