Another alt. question

Post by tybob81 »

A customer we are restoring his 67 for had me put in a new painless kit and while I was at it he wanted all new alt, started, voltage regulator and everything else electrial. He wants it to look bone stock so I put in the I think 60.. maybe 65? amp alt in place of the old smaller 40? amp to have a little more juice. I told him about a 3g swap but he didn't want the truck to look modified(except for the 4v intake and 4v carb). My question is about the voltage regulator. When I bought the new voltage regulator I thought we were going to reuse the old alt. Now we are using the bigger one. Is there any difference? I just wanted to make sure because I don't want to put the wrong one on and napa can't tell me the difference.

This is easy, but tedious.

Buy a regulator for a 77 Granada - Electronic type.
Take the cover off the original regulator (It should be about 1.25" tall)
restore/refurb the old cover.
take the cover off of the new regulator
Put the old cover on the new regulator.
Throw away new cover.

Install.

This will also solve the blinking headlights common to the old-style regulator (Relay activated), but still look like an original.

If you must have an original style (with the cross bar below the contacts) Call Bel-Kirk mustang on Bel-Red road http://bel-kirkmustang.com/ and tell them you need a 'concourse correct' 67 Voltage regulator.

Don't tell them it is for a truck, or why you want it. The owner is a bit stodgy (read: older than dirt) and is not good out of his comfort zone, and won't cross-sell anything (Disclaimer: I used to work there, for him. I like him, but know his style).

HTH,

Eric

Thank you for the feedback. Turns out it is the same part for many year fords so it dosen't matter. I swapped out the points for a flame thrower 2 coversion while I was checking out the part numbers in the NAPA books. Everything is sparking and charging great. It also looks stock to boot!
