Painting the Steering Wheel

Post by Wooley Booger »

Greetings All - I've recently completed re-painting the exterior of the 'ol F100 in a local college class. This semester I am taking on re-painting the interior and re-upholstering the seats. The question is relative to painting the steering wheel - I have single stage enamel paint which I used for the exterior and plan to use for the interior.... will that work for painting the steering wheel too? Thanks for any advice!

i would read on the can if it suitable for that type of material first. the steering wheel is made of a hard rubber ond might not hold the paint. great lookin truck b the way.

Hey Wooley Booger,

Welcome to the FORDification the best Ford truck forum on the planet.
Your truck is comin' along real nice...

To answer your question, Yes, you can use the same paint you used to paint your truck on the steering wheel.
You will have to use a good degreaser to remove the oils, use some good steel wool (00000) to clean it up good.
You need to use a good self etching primer to prime it with... then sand and paint like you would the exterior.
If there are any cracks that need to be fixed, Eastwood sells a steering wheel repair kit, that has had some good things said about it here.

Good luck,

Hey Wooley Booger,

I like the color scheme you chose for your truck and it looks like you did a great job! Great job on your choice of logins for this site too. I almost wanted to address you as Wooley' or 'Booger but I thought I'd play it safe.

Thanks kaptnkaos... I looked up the Eastwood site on the net and got a few ideas on how to proceed. I'll post more pics as the job unfolds...WB

Yeah, you can do it. I'd recommend putting a spare wheel on and giving the one you paint a month or so to hard cure. I didn't and had some fingerprints get indented in the paint during some spirited driving (IE Idiot avoidance)...
