Window Knobs
Ok, I'm new here, just got my 1971 F100 and I'm in the middle of the restoration process. It's alot more expensive than I thought haha. Anyways, how in the world do I get the window handle off? Its still got the cap on it, so i can't get to the screw. It's completly frustrating, so any help would be great. Thanks

Re: Window Knobs
There's a self-adhesive sticker covering the center, where the screw is. Just take something thin (like a razor blade) and carefully lift the edge of the sticker to prevent damaging it, and peel it off. You'll then see the screw.

Re: Window Knobs
The problem is that it isn't a sticker. Its like a screw cap, thingy. I'm not worried about damaging the window handle because we're trying to replace it. And the 'screw cap thingy' is basically taking up the entire circumfrence of where the screw should be..... Any ideas? is this even OEM for the 1971 Ford F-100 Custom? Or just some stupid aftermarket device to confuse me? ![Confused :?](./images/smilies/icon_confused.gif)

Re: Window Knobs
Oh...you're not trying to remove the whole handle, you're trying to remove the knob from the handle, right?
The knob and the piece on the back are pressed together. The piece on the back is basically like a very large tack with barbs and is pressed into a hole in the back of the knob, so it's gonna be difficult to remove, and next to impossible to remove without destroying it.

Re: Window Knobs
if you are replcing just the knob take some pliers and mash the knob into dust. if you are wanting to save the knob you might not be able to do it.

Re: Window Knobs
On the subject of window knobs, the plastic ones from LMC are junk. Broke two of them trying to press them into the handle.

nah, it's easy. Just wain until,
A) it's raining & you left the window down
B) you jump in the truck in the summer & need to get the windows down in a hurry.
either way, the window knob will magically remove itself fron the crank assy.
FWIW, i grab handles off mid/late 70's ford vehicles in the salvage yards. Maybe not 100 point stuff, but they bolt right in place.
As a metter of fact, i AM trying to keep up with the Jones'

Re: Window Knobs
The HELP! section at my local Napa has all sorts of replacement knobs. My truck didn't have either window crank knob and I was able to find near perfect replacements.

Re: Window Knobs
I got my last window handles and some fancy chrome bezels off a mid to late 70's LTD. They have the black knobs and I can't remember if my truck had black or clear knobs stock but it doesn't really matter anyway as I like the black ones.
I paid around $3 for them at the pull a part.
