Odometer reading

Post by TNIceWolf »

I read this odometer to say......two hundred and twenty thousand two hundred and forty two miles. Who agrees and disagrees and why?

it is twenty thousand two hundred fourty two and seven tenths of a mile. the white dial is only coutned as tenths of a mile. if you do not count the white dial there are only 5 places in that number.

Could be, depending on how may times the odometer has rolled over.

Well here is something my uncle taught me a couple of decades ago about those old odometers and figuring out the actual mileage on one if it had the original odometer.....Not counting the white tenths of a mile reading.......every time the odometer turns a hundred thousand miles...one didgit from right to left will slightly offset. In this case the four is the second didgit.........meaning it had turned at least two hundred thousand.....and that actually fits the mechanical condition of the truck. Call Ripleys........believe it or not.....lol

All of the twos look low, the 0 and the 4 look high. So I don't just see the 4 as being offset.

I just went out and looked at mine. 82521 miles. Original odometer, been in the family since it was new in Dec of '69, never rolled over, that's the actual mileage.

It makes a slight V shape with the 8 and the 1 high and the 5 the low point. The two 2s are at the same middle level.

On the older speedometers, the odometer could be pulled and the mileage adjusted to whatever number you wanted (or was necessary).

I worked at dealerships for years, and any time a speedometer was replaced, we had to set the odometer to match the original mileage showing on the old one.

When this was done (and done right), there was NO way to tell.

My dad taught me when I was only about 10 years old.

As a general rule whenever I see a vehicle from the '60s I add on at least 200K to whatever the odometer reads.

Fordman's right, that odometer is showing 20K. Ford didn't go to the hundred thousand digit until late 80's, early 90's.
