Radio options

Post by 1970Custom »

I've been seeing quite a few CD player threads, and I'm curious as to if there's any Ford factory AM/FM radios that'll fit in the original hole w/o modifications to the mounting locations...

I put in a aftermarket (70's vintage) 8 track AM/FM in my truck a while back. It was for a dentside truck best I can tell. The mounting tabs were the same but I did have to remove about 1/8" on the faceplate. It was a simple mod to do. I just used some 40 grit paper & sanded it down until I hod room for the new unit.

You can always look for a factory Am/Fm radio. They were an option on the rangers I believe. Even the Ford trucks into the 80's had the same style of radio as our trucks do. I see them on ebay all the time. I have a factory Am/Fm im working on right now. Its from a 73' dent, so Im not 100% sure on how its going to fit. As long as the posts line up right, you can usally massage the faceplate to suit your needs.

My71Sportcustom had an AM/FM in it new. Never seen one like it online though. It had about 5 push buttons across the front 2 had Am on them and the rest had FM on them. Only had the center speaker though. I have never seen the stereo speakers in a real truck have you? I have seen the adds just not in person

My 1980 F150 had stereo speakers.....I believe. In the door panels I remember a grill on both doors......so long ago I can't really remember.

Yes Virginia a Factory TRUCK AM-FM does exist!

This is a thread about the one I scored on ebay. I can only imagine how rare they are. FMs were not popular when our 'dents' were new, even in cars especially in trucks.

http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... ry#p389364

You will notice that the radio has a TRUCK part number. While I am sure it shares circuit boards etc. with a car radio it does have some truck only features. (most likely to fit the dash)

The speaker grilles were the same ones used in 69 Mustangs/Cougars and are available as reproductions.
When I installed my FM I used factory Ford 1966 8-track (round) under dash grilles because I could not figure out how to best cut the door and mount the 1969 Mustang grilles.

Most factory Ford FMs on ebay are from the late 70s & 80s cars and have a R/L slider under the push buttons. I have heard thes do not fit a bump side dash without modifications.
