Interior firewall covering

Post by OldRedFord »

What have you guys done to cover the inside of the firewall on our trucks? Id get a ABS cover but I do not think it would look right...feel too commercial.

I am no where near this point yet but I am thinking of using the ABS Plastic. If I don't do that I may try to clean an old one up and cover it in the same carpet I use for my floor.

the factory used two types of firewall covers. the molded paper coverwith jute backing . and carpet with jute backing behind it. the abs covers are a one piece fits all type of solution. you can use carpet. but if you do you should also use a backer behind the carpet fo rnoise reduction and firewall heat protection. or try and save your old one. or one from another truck.

While I was a little skeptical about the overall appearance before I purchased the ABS cover myself, after receiving it I was pleasantly surprised. It's not thick hard plastic, it's thin, very soft and pliable and looks very similar to the cardboard version, except that it's got a surface texture to it instead of the smooth cardboard...but it's going to be a lot more durable and easier to keep clean. It's got the rubber trim along the bottom and comes with insulation material bonded to the back. I thought it was money well-spent.

And you really don't have a choice anyway, since they're the only option. The cardboard version isn't being reproduced.

Here's a few pictures I saved from a recent E-bay listing, in which the seller had installed the ABS cover.

I'm new at this but I have a 72 F250 and am getting ready to take the interior apart and install sound dampners/deadeners, insulation, carpet, etc. I've see the ABS firewall covers on DC. Dumb question but what is it? Does it replace something that already exists"? Is it for sound/heat? Do you have to completely remove the dash to install it? Any help and tips before I start this is greatly appreciated!

yes i tis already there and is soemthing that i susually butchered up over the years or gets damaged when removing it. it is for sound and heat protection as well as looks. you have to remove the heater the fuse box and the steerign column at minimum to install the firewall covers. oh and gas pedal.

Hmm... I need to replace my insulation as well as my carpet, after I repair the rust. I was figuring on the tar based stuff I took out, but if all that's available is the ABS stuff that was talked about, i will use it. I'm not concerned about stock, I want the sound deadening and heat insulation.

Daddsgirl you are correct it is the black plastic that comes down the fire wall and covers the top of the carpet by the fire wall
