seat repair parts

Post by Old Bird »

I got a new seat cover from Mac's and have all the padding and burlap to redo the seats on my 68 Ranger. Unfortunately, when I got all of the old seat cover and padding material off, I found one of the coil springs on the driver's side is broken, split about 1/3 of the way down. I looked at Mac's and don't see any replacement springs or seat parts, does anyone know where I can get the coil springs?

The other part I don't have is one of the original bolts that goes from the seat back bracket to the seat bottom frame. I've got one (with the big hex-hed), but the other was replaced with a standard bolt and the chrome cover won't go back on. Any source for those?

Thanks!
Timothy

It's for my twin boys, sure they're only 3 right now, but it's all for them! Well, and my twin girls. They're not even 1 yet, but when they are I'll have a pit crew!

As for the seat springs I'd ask around at your local interior shops, they may have some. As for the bolt I'd check out McMaster Carr they seem to have just about any fastener you could imagine !

lmc has the botls for the sides i didnt see the coil springs listed int he seat rebuild kit they offer. there is a seat out at the junkyard from a 79 with the coils and the botls still in it. i could get them for you if you need them. or mayeb someone else has them from a seat they arent going to use any more.

Thanks for the tips. I'll look at LMC.

I appreciate the offer for getting them from the junkyard, if you happen to be going there anyway they should be an easy thing to get. If you're not, let me see if I can get them locally first.

Actually I did remove a stock seat from my truck and I can pull a few springs from it. Let me know if you're interested, you can have them for the cost of shipping !

Thanks Casey for sending the springs! The seat has firmed up a bunch. It doesn't feel like new, but definitely a ton better than it used to be. I put on new canvas, foam and seat covers from Mac's, tied some springs together and replaced one broken spring with a spare that Casey had, and put new chrome covers from LMC on. It sure ain't perfect, but not bad for my first attempt. Total cost was about 3 bills. I'm sure a good shop could have done better for about twice that, but I'm happy knowing that I did it and the few hundred bones in my pocket should get me a nice new stereo for the truck.

Unfortunately, once I finally got the seat back in (it's been out about six months as I was trying to find the time to do the work), I wanted to take it for a spin around the block to see how the rebuilt seat felt. It started to fire up right away but never caught. Then it was turning over with no fire. I got out to check under the hood and instantly smelled gas. Under the hood there was fuel all over the intake manifold, it looks like my carb gaskets all dried out in the six months that it sat. Damn desert air! Time for a carb rebuild, I'm sure I'll be able to finish that in the next six months too . . .

I've been looking at the seat covers from Mac's and it appears that the seat covers are the bone oxen vinyl with the Sahara cloth inserts....looks very sharp. If you go to www.macsautoparts.com you can see the seat color samples.
