And for my 3rd post... #$&* pig wont start!

Post by e944 »

So it was running and driving fine. About a week later it felt like it was running on 7. The points look fine (it's been 20 years since I messed with points, and im lucky to remember that much), I changet the plugs (fouled), and the cap and roter. No spark. I think the coil might be toast. It looks like it should have a B.C. in the part #. I started running #'s off stuff while I was at it.

C4AE-6090G heads
C4SE9425A intake
D4TE block (why not take the 64 block when your taking the other stuff?)

And I have not done the stroke to figure out the CID.

The truck is a 72 Highboy

Any idea about the lack of spark?

Thanks
Erin

Well, I cont. checked the wires. Looked good. I know the batt. is charged (on a batt. tender). I pulled the cap off and pulled the points apart to have a look, and they were kind of fused. The thing fired right up. So off to ebay to get a pertronix 1281/coil.

Thanks

What's bad about Pertronix? I've had the same Pertronix in my '63 390 for about 8 years, never had a problem.

There has been several people here on this site complaining about their new Pertronix ignitors.

I wonder if Pertronix has slacked off on their quality control :hmm:

The 3 model got horrible reviews on the web somewhere. One of the car mag websites. I was just cruising one night and came across the article on the ignitor3.

But here is was the II that got hammered.

O.K. Thanks for all the help. I went with the accel 2020, Accel coil 8040, and a new set of spiral plug wires. Pretty easy to install (I didnt pull the dist.), put it all together, and just cranked. Pulled a plug to look for spark and nothing. Started the BBQ and thinking "how would that be getting any voltage?". Went back to it and the directions didnt say anything about using the old coil positive, but the diagram showed it. So I half a*#ed hooked it up and BAM, fired right up. Running better than ever. Then I saw that I still had the test plug wire unhooked (I had put the plug in though, so stuff didnt get in). Turned it off, pluged in the 8th wire, and man what a differance! Still a little hesitation, but I think that is the Carter needing some dialing in.

So Thanks again!
Erin
