C6 Rebuild -- Questions
Hey all, from your past experiences what has it cost you to rebuild a C6 for your truck? I have seen prices for rebuilt ones from $750 - $1500 and rebuild kits that range from $99 to $300.
What are your suggestions on this? Buy or Rebuild yourself? And if you did it yourself is there anyone's kit that is suggested over another (or components of a kit)?
I am looking at a standard rebuild with perhaps the most basic shift enhancement kit.
Thanks,
Bobby

re: C6 Rebuild -- Questions
A TCI tranny (C6) will run you about 740 from summit or jegs, and you can sell or keep the original. Make shure you order the right one, FE bolt patern and slip yoke not the 13.5 tail shaft.
If you know how to rebuild it yourself then any good rebuild kit will do (250-300).

I can take it apart, but getting it back together is another story!

I checked on both jegs and summit, the only C6 for BB they listed all had the 13 1/2 tail shaft. What length tail shaft should I be looking for?
Thanks for the help.

re: C6 Rebuild -- Questions
The correct C6 for a truck application will have a flange for bolting the driveshaft onto, not a slip yoke.
The slip yoke application is for cars.
Call the company selling the tranny and verify that is has the bolt on yoke.

re: C6 Rebuild -- Questions
Im not trying to hijack this thread but I have a question thats sort of in line with it.
How many different C6 truck tranny's were produced and which one is best to have?
Im asking because I have two C6 transmissions now and have noticed slight differences between them.
Im going to rebuild one of them and want to make sure I sink the money into the right one.
I have one in my daily driver (70 F250 2WD) with what looks like a cast iron tail shaft housing and the speedo cable hole is on the right side.
The other transmission I just pulled out of an 72 F100 and it looks the same except it has an aluminum tail shaft housing and the speedo hookup is on the left side. It also has some kind of a two wire switch on it that the other one doesnt have.
My plan was to rebuild one of them and not down my truck while doing it.
So, I guess my real question is: Is there a real difference between a C6 out of an 3/4 ton verses a 1/2 ton? Is the 3/4 ton tranny more heavy duty in any way?

re: C6 Rebuild -- Questions
If you bring in your trans in can be rebuilt for under $400. Most of the work is removing and puting it back in.

re: C6 Rebuild -- Questions
That sounds like a pretty good price.
I paln to have mine done by the same shop that did the tranny on my Taurus.
$500 and it comes with a 1 year warranty.

fordloaf... I guess since no response has been recieved where I can get it done for under $400 it is not anywhere local to me, but perhaps close to you.
Thanks for the information I will keep looking.

re: C6 Rebuild -- Questions
You might asking around at some car lots or even some Ford Dealerships. Sometimes they farm out stuff like this, or might be a guy there that would rebuild it on the side.
Do you know anyone thats had some Fords in years past? Ask some co-workers, neighbors, friends. I'd just kind of get the word out. Might not get anywhere, but never know if you don't ask.

re: C6 Rebuild -- Questions
Thanks 70SportCustom.
I used to have musclecar projects and was in tune with who was doing what, but have been out of it for about 20 years and the old faces are gone and I don't know any of the new ones.
I have a few contacts still to try and see what I can find.

I guess I didn't answer your question. There is a guy at one of my local Ford garages (in NC) that will rebuild a C6 to stock specs for $350. No idea if he's any good, and what is included at that price. He's a friend of a friend, so I'm just going by what I've heard.

re: C6 Rebuild -- Questions
Thanks fordloaf and 70SportCustom you gave me information that was very helpful. I now know that they are out there at a reasonable price so I will try and dig up some of my old contacts to see who is doing what for what rate.
I appreciate the information and help.
