Just finished converting the factory air ubnit in my 71 to 134a, so nice to have working ac agian. who else is runbning ac in thier bumps? hopefully it will help the value in texas when i try to sell it.

But, nice job. I hope to do that to my F100 later on this summer...along with fixing the heat side of it too...It'll probobly be winter before I get my a/c working, and then summer again when the heat gets working. :lol:

I was going to charge my ac with the freeze 12. I called all of the local parts stores and they wouldnt sell it to me. So, I have decided to convert to 134a. What did you have to replace to do the conversion? I havent figured the valves out on top of the compressor. Should they be screwed all of the way in to be closed?

Can you explain the process of converting over to 134a? I need to the the same thing to my truck.

i don't know anything about closing or opening those valves. i recharged my system last summer before it got hot. and my system had already been comverted. but the conversion kit is two fittngs that screw onto the top of the fill valves fittings. you then put in the correct oil for the 134A. not a whole bottle but enough to lube up the system. mayeb 1/8 a pint is what i poured in before i sucked the system down. the the system has to be eveacuated. to zero on the gauges and hold to check for leaks. once that is done and it doesnt leak. you start to refill it with the 134A. my system took 3-4 cans. i can't remember now.

converting is pretty simple. remove the compressor and drain the oil from it, refill with the r134a oil. napa carries screw on adapters for the charge valves on the top. make sure you keep the hi/low sides the same. charge with 134a and enjoy the cold.

is the discharge side the "High"side?

i don't know. all i can say is the hook up sizes are different sizes for high and low. the high side is large and the low side is small.

Would you trust your local mechanics/AC people to do this? After looking at my system i noticed a R134 sticker on the Ac unit. How can i tell if it has been converted already? I am ready to get my AC going.

the 134 fittings are larger than the r12 fittings so you wont be able to hook up the r12 charge lines to the 134 fittings.
