Interior restoration project

Post by garner67 »

Wrapping up my interior restoration project...

I spent the last month or so restoring my interior. One of my main goals was to change it from Red to Black. I think the rattle can paint job turned out pretty good, but the other changes like the reupholstered seat, F600 dash panel, new repro steering wheel, new carpet and a home made head liner really made a difference. I started by tearing all the old mildewed red carpet out, only to find I had to weld in a few patches to fix some rust holes. Then, I cleaned up and painted all the interior metal surfaces, even behind the fuel tank. I still need to add a tach to the instrument cluster, but it's good enough to drive again. It feels like a new truck, and it doesn't have that old musky stench smell anymore!!!

Just to give you an idea... here's a really poor quality "before" picture.

Here's a decent shot of the whole cab interior as it stands today.

Instrument panel (i still want to install a tach).

Painted doors, including vent window frame. I purchased the metal door panels from eBay, but had to repaint them. Then, I finished the panels with some stainless steel hardware. I also bought all new arm rests, all new weather stripping and installed a little bit of sound deadener in the doors, which made a big difference in how the doors sound when closing... much more solid sounding, less tin can sound.

I purchased Ranchero50's custom billet ashtray pull and dome light. Here's a shot of the dome light installed.

I also restored my headliner by buying some vinyl from a fabric store and glued it to the old headliner (sorry for the crappy pic).

Here's a shot of the fuel tank being painted.

Good ol' Rustoleum Semi Gloss. I'm sure there are higher quality paints, but I've had good luck with it on other items I've painted. It's affordable, and it seems to wear pretty well.

I upload pics to the gallery here at FORDification. Then, I open the image in the gallery and I copy and paste the image address into the post, but you have to use BBCode. It's not that hard to learn, but it's a little tricky to get use to.

If you need more details, check out this link... How to post pictures on this forum

Just the spray bomb stuff. However, I did a lot of prep. First, I sanded all the panels. Next, I sprayed some rattle can high build primer over old the scuffed paint (SEM brand from the local auto body supply store). Then, I sanded the primer-coated panels with 600 grit paper before laying down the final rustoleum semi gloss black paint. All the work was done in my driveway. I'd do the prep work during the afternoon, but I'd wait till the morning to paint anything... it's been too windy during the afternoons around here.

Being unemployed right now allowed me to get a lot of work done during the day. If I were working, it would have taken a lot longer to do this project. As a side note, it looks like I may take a job in Salt Lake City, UT, so my days of leisure may be coming to a close, which is a good thing... I'm running out of money!
