ONE BRAKE LIGHT Working

Post by jp2005 »

I have looked over a few threads but cant find anything that is helping. The passager side brake is working but the drivers side is not. It worked before! All lights are working fine when I turn them on. Its like I get everything fixed and I just keep fixing stuff :?

probably a bad bulb or socket. wiggle the bulb. or replace it. or you can buy new socket guts at the parts store. it will be for trailer lights but the principle is the same. it has two connectors on it with two wires. or maybe the wirign connections and dirty or loose under the truck.

it does sound like a bad bulb or bulb connection.

i agree on checking the socket. get behind the socket and wiggle and push in on the wire. or use a test light to check for power to the appropriate wire.

also the most common cause i've found to be is faulty trailer wiring.. so if you have a trailer harness installed, get under there and wiggle the connections

That is a common problem that is related to the Turn Signal Switch (TSS). Try wiggling the Turn Signal Lever and see if it makes the light go on and off, if so the contacts in the switch are going out and you need to replace it.
If the light works with the turn signal then there is not a problem with the bulb or socket.

:yt:

If the bulb flashes with the turn signal, then the socket is OK.

not exactly the contact in the socket on one side can be worn down when the other isn't.

If it works with the turn but not the brake it can't be the socket because they use the same post in the socket. There are two posts and one is for brake AND turn and the other is for the running lamp. The bulb grounds through the base. If it always works for turn but not brake then it has to be a bad turn signal switch connection as that is the only point at which the wiring seperates. The brake light power comes from a single wire to the turn signal switch where it is split to two sides and you say one always works so we know you have power at that point. If the turn signal always works then we know that the wire from the switch to the tail light is good as well so that means it is bad contact in the switch which is very common. There are contacts in the switch that are basically rivets that the wires are attached to. When they overheat they melt into the plastic of the switch until they no longer contact the wiper. Hawkrod
