Speaker wire routing

Post by TNIceWolf »

I am looking for info and pics of how others may have routed the speaker wiring to their doors when adding speakers to the doors. Pics of a factory setup even more welcome especially if showing the stock location of the speakers. Thanks!!

I ran my wires thru the loops on the underside of the dash that the wiring harness is in. Then , they go thru the grommets in the doors. I have 6x9s in my doors and 6.5s in my headliner. Fantastic sound in my opinion. Let me know if you need pictures.

Pics of the routing thru the door would be a great help!!! I found a decent set of 6X8's I want to use in mine but am unsure of how to best place them and route the wiring from the cab to the doors.

That helps a LOT!!!
Have you noticed any real binding or a tendancy to pinch the wires in the hinge area with that routing? I want my speakers in the bottom of the door itself and not the trim panel. Something closer to what i see as the factory location more under the vent window area on the flat under the trim panel to ensure no interfereance with window operation.....but the wiring looks pretty good to me!

I haven't had any problems with mine or my wifes. I plan to do our 68 the same way. The only thing I've ran into is the depth of the speaker. What i did was I got some pegboard and made a spacer so the window regulator clears the speaker. The pegboard is 1/8 thick I think. I like the speaker in the door panel myself. That way if I ever want to change it all I have to do is get another door panel versus a hole in the door.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, towtruckerfour, could you explain, or post pictures of how you put speakers in your headliner? Thanks!

No problem. I sent you a pm back. For everyone who likes how I did it, this is what I did. The door speakers were easy. Just use the template that comes with the speakers and watch the depth of the speaker you use or the window hits it. I used pegboard for a spacer. For the headliner, I went 6 inches out from the center support and 7 inches back from the front edge of the headliner. No clearance issues or problems so far.

Quick question about speaker depth. About how deep can the speakers be without having issues with the window regulator and other parts of that nature? Thanks

I want to say it was like 3 1/4 inches. I just took off the door panel and rolled the window down so I could measure from the inside of the door to the window elevator. Not a big problem to get around.

There are some high-dollar door jamb wire looms that a lot of street rodders use:

But they also have some less expensive ones that would seem to offer a little protection from pinching and cutting:
