I have a 69 and a 70 and on both of them the speaker location is in the middle of the dash. But if you don't care about "correct" you could leave them in the kick panel

The dash is the stock location as far as I know. I have them in my door panels and headliner in my two trucks

Why is it that the trucks are always the best running vehicles in the family?

The correct location for a 69 is one in the center of the dash. For 70-72 I think, maybe only 71-72 the FM stereo had an option of having one on the lower part of each door. I put a 6x9 on the door panel part of my truck and it sounds great

Not sure of the age of this post but just my $ .02 added..

I have a pretty extensive background both in 12 volt and Audio itself. And my opinions are just that. However, work with me here. If your concerned with an aesthetic approach to OEM placement, keep in mind whats available and known today wasnt thought of with our trucks back then. AM was just beyond all the rage back then and the need for stereo compensation was, well... different thoughts existed back then.

If you take a speaker and put it in the top corners of the dash and measured each distance to the corresponding ear in the drivers seat. the Drivers side dash speaker would be (hypothetical numbers used here as ea application has many variables) say 21" Left and 39.5" for the right speaker. Now lets take the speakers to the front doors. Now the drivers side location is 36.75" from the left ear and the passenger door location is now 52" from the right ear. Move the speakers forward into the kick panel areas. Now we see that the drivers side moves away farther by moving it forward. Lets interpret that as an almost 10" gain. so now we have a 46.75" distance to the left ear. and since the right speaker is only moving forward and NOT farther away we only gain 3 more inches in distance but the speaker is moved 10" forward. We now have 55" in total distance from the right ear to the right speaker.

Now if your with me still after putting this picture in your head. We started out with the right dash speaker the greatest distance away compared to the left side dash speaker. There is a difference in distance of 18.5". By moving the speakers into the kick panel we ended up with a left speaker distance of 46.75" and a right speaker difference of 55" totaling out to a lesser 8.25" of distance. Now before you shake your head at me understand what we did mentally was play with and prove time delay differences in stereo sound. by placing the speakers in kick panels we lessen the time delay and equaled out the sound.

Hope that helps put a thought or two in some peoples heads... ;)

It helped a lot filling in some missing info I needed for a planned upgrade I am researching here in another thread where I needed info on the wiring routing and placement of door mounted speakers. Very good information to help make a "sound " decision with.

Thanks!!

Yea I am a bit more into the SQ than SPL. Ive been there done that and still have both kidneys.

What I like more is sitting people in a vehicle that is abnormally isolated from outside noise (very quiet) and listening to their own music CD's and letting them hear things they've never heard before. Clarity is key with me. My system will have a 12 yr old head Unit (Eclipse 7001) with the matching 6 disc changer unless I can find a 2nd one to Daisey chain the two together before I finalize plans.

Fed through Audioquest http://www.audioquest.com/(LOOK>Interconnects>analog>Diamondback cables) to an Audio Control EQL 13 band eq with built in Line Driver/noise gate (9volts RCA output lets the amp work less harder with higher signal quality for less distortion and background noise) which feeds into my Eclipse 4ch amp 50x4. Trust me, Unregulated power supplies make a world of difference when used correctly. through more AudioQuest Speaker cable, type4 for all the mids and highs, type6 wired through the sub enclosure. The 4ch amp will run 3ch, 50w to each kick panel and door which will run a 6" Midbass driver (Door x-over 80-400hz), 5.25 Mid range w/component tweeter (kick Panels x-over 400hz up), A second tweeter mounted in the lower A/pillar or molded into the Carbon Fiber dash cover I'm going to make will be aimed at the rear of the rear view mirror.

This will allow me to maintain mostly a 4ohm load across 8 speakers setting the front stage and allowing me to pinpoint more detail with some rather nice separation. It will also raise the sound stage itself up higher in the cab giving much more presence. The 3-4th channels will be bridged and directed to three 8" Diamond Audio D3 8ohm subs (which will offer me a safe 2.8 ohm load when done at not quite 200w mono) where the OEM fuel Cell was in an enclosure molded to the back of the cab (possibly also done in Carbon Fiber and MDF).

Since its such a small space there is no real need for rear fill (speakers) in the cab. The bottom end is tight and precise and will be in sealed enclosure to maintain that and its small size. I like a little bump in the bottom but I've maintained keeping nearly 5-8K worth of gear in nearly every car I've had. Its tuned to enjoy and wow from within the inside. Only opening of the doors or blatantly running down the street with the windows down gives it away. Even then, the total system power of 200w allows me to maintain a small foot print in the sound off. Much will be left unseen without pointing it out specifically in the truck. I still believe in the theory of "If you cant see it, you cant steal it"... Eliminating would be thieves to have little or no notice im coming down the street. On top of the system being prepped from rattles and buzzes thanks to Dynamat, The enclosure itself will be custom designed and tuned for particular frequency band that does NOT introduce buzz or rattles from the frequency's it will produce based upon its needs and my wants.

Therefore again keeping my stuff longer, and not making someone else want it more than I :)

Paint that in your mind

Love sharing what I've learned through the years... Ha at one time I wouldn't buy a car unless I could mentally take it apart in my head and put my thoughts of self personalization or engineering into it first.. :)
