headliners....

Post by jzjames »

Whats everyone doing for headliners? Do original ones still exist in good shape? The replacement cardboard ones from LMC etc are like over $100.
Mine doesnt even have one. I was thinking of slapping a couple of dynomat pads on the roof, but dont know what I will be doing for a headliner. Anybody got any nice custom headliners with pics?

Heres what I was gonna do with my '69. I have an upholstery shop nearby that does cars. I was gonna upgrade to a more modern "cloth" foam backed headliner in white, if I can get it, and finish it off with the chrome headliner trim I have. I think he can do it for about $50. My friend had the headliner redone in his '85 S-10 for about that price.
Just an idea!

I have done my own also, same way F100 is saying. I used my old crappy ones for stensils cut new ones out of the board I got from the upholstery shop contact cemented both sides foam back of the material and the board let it sit then stuck em together carefully rolling them out then trimmed all the edges off. Their still holdin up with the hot summer days in Las Vegas.

slap a piece of thin insulation up there, then cut a piece of thick veneer up and screw it into the origional holes, worked really good on my step dads 76 highboy

Here is what I have been thinking of doing. My truck is so loud with the exhaust that I need to put the speakers closer to be heard without blasting them. I was thinking of putting them in the headliner. Mine is trashed and needs to be replaced anyway. The only problem is that it gets so dang hot here in arizona, what can I use as insulation to keep them from melting. Anyway, just my thoughts, good luck with yours.

thank god my original is in perfect shape. but i think i would just upolster my head liner if it were damaged as i've seen the others on this site do. as far as insulation i dont know fiberglass is good for sound deadening in houses but i dont know about putting it over my head. my thoughts are that it might filter down onto my neck at some point. i wouldn't want that.

Make sure you leave some type of provision for the headliner to breathe.

Speaking of headliners, I could never be as lucky on this project as I was when I did my '72 swb about15 yrs ago.
I was working in the truck shop at Winn Dixie warehouse in Ft Worth, at one point they used the space above the offices to store parts . We had one of those slack days and my boss decided to clean out up there and take some of the spare shelves down to the new parts room . way down on the far end behind the shelves was a big Ford parts carton thinking it was just a box that had been broken down and flattened out I was about to bend it in half and toss it over the rail in the dumpster. Something made me pull it apart and look inside,it was a factory nos headliner that had probably been ordered for a cab job who know when at that time Winn Dixie hadn't ran f-600's in over 20 yrs . I asked my boss if I could have the carton because I wanted the extra large Ford logo for my garage wall, He wrote me a tool pass for a scrap carton . Needless to say the next time he happened by my house I had this over sized Ford logo on the back wall of my garage and a brand new headliner in my '72 . How does Jesse James put it on "Monster Garage"...."FREEBIE"

Let's see some pics of these upholestered headliners.

I sprayed kilz stain sealer on mine, and then spray painted it tan. looks like crap, it's all blotchy with streaks. Maybe a third coat tomorrow? I guess even with the sealer it still soaks into the material uneven. I guess its better than cigarette stains, barely. maybe.
