Instrument Panel Voltage Regulator Question

Post by forrestbump »

I had posted a question earlier titled: "Windshield Wipers Quit". Got some most appreciated answers as my auto electrical skills suck.

Short story: my Factory Windshield Wipers, Oil Pressure Gauge, Temp. Gauge, Fuel Gauge and Turn Indicators quit working when it was raining, so I thought it might be a short.

After checking my wiring and ignition switch, which are all in pretty good shape considering forrestbump's age, I stumbled on the possibility that the cause of failure for all these items simultaneously might be my "Instrument Panel Voltage Regulator" giving up the ghost. Found this out right here at FORDification from some old posts.

Just thought I'd pass this bit of information along to all others here that may be having the same issues and/or are as electrically challenged as I am.

Now I just need to get a new IPVR then install it. :fr:

I've got a good used one for a 70 (one year only part). IIRC, because it's one year only for trucks, it's a really high-dollar part (around $85). Once in a while you run across an NOS one on ebay for a few dollars less.

I'd love to sell you the one I have, but, trouble is, that's not your problem.

The IPVR supplies regulated voltage to the gauges ONLY. It has no bearing on windshield wipers or turn indicators. Those are on separate circuits.

I suggest you do some more checking before spending any money... :2cents:

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

That's not an oil leak :nono: That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

Fordamericana and 70_F100 I want to Thank BOTH of You for responding!

Sounds like I need to do some more electrical investigating before I plop down any $$.

Funny thing is I called NAPA today and was quoted a price of $16.21 for a IPVR for a 1970 F250!?! Course that was over the phone and the price may change when I got there or the "Kid" looked up the wrong item...who knows since it doesn't appear that I need one now.

Anyway, back to my tracing down the cause.

Did you get yourself a test light or multimeter yet? I am still curious about your ignition switch...

Fordamericana, Thank You so much for checking in on me.

You know the old saying "Life Is What Happens To You While You're Busy Making Other Plans" well my Land Lady asked me to move out THIS COMING Weekend...YIKES. So I've been kinda busy gettin' ready to move and find a new place to live so I haven't had a chance to get Forrest Bump's electrical stuff fixed or get the tools to do so. But I WILL ASAP!

It's been dry so OK without wipers and I've dusted off my ability using hand/arm signals just to get by.

You'll find this funny though, as my EX Wife and Her Boyfriend are gonna let me and my truck stay with them until I can find a more permanent place. That should be interesting to say the very least. Best part is I'll get to see my youngest Daughter EVERY DAY!!

Thanks Again,

Larry
