How to be as quite as possible inside

Post by 1971ford »

I am trying to make the inside of my daily driver '69 f250 4x4 with 390/4spd as quite as i possibly can on a semi-budget.

So far I have layed down sound deadener on all of the floor, and doubled it up on the firewall. I also put it inside the doors and i am about to, but have not yet put it on the door panels, roof, back of the cab, and in the cab corners.
I looked for every hole i could find in the firewall/cab and plugged it with sound deadener or something else.

At idle I can't even tell the truck is on, it is so quiet. But as soon as I get going and the typical manual tramsission whine/engine compression kicks in, it gets to the point where you would have to shout for the passenger to hear.

I don't see what it can't be as quite as a modern truck... they're both sheetmetal cabs and insulation. Maybe I just need to pile more deadener/insilation on? I'm sure my engine/tranny is noiser than modern trucks too but not by a whole lot..

What else would you do to quite the cab down more??

Not sure what else you could do, maybe use a sound deading material under the cab and back of the firewall. I have the same truck and when it was stock with no padding it was very loud. I also think changing the oil in the transmission and transfer case to 50W made a difference. I was thinking about using spray foam around the headliner and behind the back window. Keep in mind if you seal everything up too tight that may also hold the sound in. Good luck enjoy reading about all your projects.

Enjoy and live with it. Comes with owning one of these great trucks. :drive: I enjoy the looks and comments I get when driving my 68. Didn't get em like this when I'd drive my o6.
Just my own opinion. Enjoy your truck. 8)

I find myself rolling my windows down so I can enjoy the sound of my exhaust while I'm cruising around town. I can't hear anything in my Expedition. I love the sound of my '71. PS, this may be a stupid question, but why are these trucks referred to as "bumpsides"? If I ask you guys, I don't have to worry about stupid looks!!

Bumpside refers to the bump on the side of '67-72 ford trucks :D Short name is bump.
So bumpside or bump = 67-72 ford truck.
73-79= dentside because of the dent on the side
