High tunnel or low tunnel

Post by terry1167 »

I have a 72 F250 2WD, Camper Special, 390 V8, automatic transmission-column. How do I tell if I have a high tunnel or low tunnel? I am going to order the molded carpet and want to make sure to order the right one. Pics are below. Thanks for your help with this!!

It looks like the high tunnel to me. If your truck has or originally came with a C6 then it should have the high hump.

Actually looks like a low tunnel. Just pull the carpet and a high tunnel will have a bolted down plate. A low tunnel will not. You can squeeze a C6 under a low tunnel but it was not factory. Someone may have done this? Pull the carpet.

If it is a factory C6 then it's a high tunnel.

that picture is of a high hump. you can tell because of the second hump under the floor mat. a low hump truck floor doesnt raise up a second stepped hump.

Thanks for all of the advice but I'm a little concerned. The folks from "Stock Interiors", where I am attempting to order the molded carpet seem to think that I need the low tunnel/hump carpet since it is a 2WD with automatic transmission on the column but several others seem to think it is the high tunnel. I don't want to order the wrong carpet since it seems like they have to custom make it and I'm not sure they will allow me to return it. I think I will have to pull the rubber mat on the truck and see if it has the plate bolted onto the top of the transmission hump. I guess that is the only way to definitely tell?

Thanks again!!

Here are your options:

1) Crawl up under the truck and look to see if you can see bolts sticking through the floorboard to hold the tunnel cover down.

2) Pull the floormat back

3) Measure the height of the hump. Is it 6" or 8"?

4) Check the VIN tag and decode it. Like BobbyFord said, if it's a factory-installed C6, it will have the tall hump. If you've got a factory FE engine, it will be a C6.

5) Take the advice you've been given. Like fordman said, the "extra" hump makes it the tall hump. The short hump will only be as tall as the first level and will not have the "second hump"...

Thanks again for the much needed assistance. Based on y'all's knowledge, looks like a high hump to me.

One more question I almost hate to ask.....what does the "FE" stand for when used in the context of Factory FE engine? Does it mean Ford engine or ?
