By head unit, i assume you are are talking about a stereo/cd player. Alot of guys on here have used a metra 99-9222 install kit and mounted there cd player in the stock location. it looks real good. do a search for the kit and you will see what i mean. Thats what im doing as soon as my kit arrives. just my :2cents:

No you don't have to cut dash. You just have to bend the ears back, and install the kit upside down so the radio will sit straight in the dash.

I haven't seen them for our trucks and couldn't find them on LMC or JCWhitney after a quick search for them. Not sure if they are made for our trucks or not but ti would be mighty tough with fresh-air vents on the kick-panel taking up the available already limited space. You could probably mold some out of fiberglass fairly easily though if you're comfortable working with fiberglass.

i was thinking about the fiberglass, but i was also thinking if i did find one for our truck, it shouldnt be that hard to just cut a notch in the kick panel for the air flow

I'm just leaving the stock radio unconnected in the dash and just connecting my MP3 player to an amplifier and speakers...no need for a head unit at all. Saves $$$ too! :2cents:

This question may have been answered already, but why couldn't you just alter the existing bezel that the old am sits in to put a din style radio in. Does that not work?

Put it in the glove box - just get an infra-red repeater remote (ebay about $30). http://cgi.ebay.com/Infrared-IR-Remote- ... 2eb3d0853e

That's how I installed mine - works great and don't have to open the glove box to change settings.
This way you can leave your original radio in the dash for authentic look.

That is what I did. Looks fine to me. I don't like the plastic of the Metra kits.
