Question about applying window tint on windows

Post by blackford72 »

I have installed my windows in my door on my 1972 F-100 and I want to put tint on them. Do I have to take the glass back out in order to apply tint?

I never have. But you want to make sure and cut it longe enough before you remove the film that you can get the glass good and wet and slide the film down inside the anti-rattle trim. That way it won't peel up on you as it dries and you start rolling your window up and down. I suppose you could take the glass out if you wanted, my opinion is that you don't need to. :2cents:

check your local laws to make sure you won't get tickets, or do what I did and just have it done and take the tickets as they come.

:yt:, If you feel like you've got to take the glass out to apply the tint to them then you could but it's definitely not something that you have to do. I think it should be relatively easy to tint the windows in a bump since it's pretty much just a square piece of glass, and if you don't have the anti-rattlers like me then it should be a total piece of cake!

When the tint shop applied the tint on my windows they didnt go all the way to the outside of the windows with tint. the felt will rub the tint and make it start peeling when you roll the window all the way up. Keep the tint about a 1/4" from the edge and you should be fine.

What do you guys think about applying it to the back glass? I have a glass that is out of the truck and thought about tinting it and then putting the rubber on it and installing. Thoughts?

I would not put it on until window is in. Because down the road if you have to remove tint for some reason it will be sealed behind the window rubber and be that much more work getting it off. Just my :2cents:

It's a lot of work, but you'll get better results with the windows out. Just be careful when you put them back in that you don't scratch the new tint.

I know this is kind of an old thread. Something that I have found to work best is when you have got the tint laid out on the window and your trying to get that perfect line at the very top of the window, take a very fine file and file the overlapped tint off the top of the window. It will give you a perfect line every time and it won't hurt the glass. If you try to cut the tint to to the upper curve of the window it won't look at good.

I've tinted my side windows and back glass a couple of times in my 71 F100. Easy since the windows are flat. I suggest doing it with the glass in the truck. Roll the side windows all the way up and trim the tint below the fuzz. If you have trouble with the rattles grabbing the tint later use some clear nail polish to glue it down on the edges. Use plenty of soapy water like said to smooth and force out the air bubbles.
