tank selector valve position

Post by kilog55 »

what is the proper set up for the valve? the way mine is now the larger part of the selector has to be in the position for the tank to flow, shouldnt it be the pointed end? and also which is the main and which is the reserve tank? id like to make sure everything is working they way Ford intended.

I am not sure I understand what you aye asking. But here goes. The long part of the vlv. handle/tail, points away. The shorter thicker part points at the tank you want to run on. Main tank is behind the seat. Under bed tank is the Aux. tank. (Info from looking at my 68 CS.) I had to clean off the vlv. plate on mine to be able to read it so I would know what tank it is turned to. I could post a pic if you want.

well on mine the handle has to be at the tank thats on in order to get fuel flow. with it pointed "forward" it runs the in cab tank. so something is goofed with my valve position as the handle can only go on one way.

there are two tank and three tank valves. the handle can also be bolted on different ways. the hoses to the valve can be changed too. some of the valves have a selector plate to tell which tank the handle pointer is selecting. soem of the plates are plastic and some were metal. i have seen bad plates both plastic and metal. rust corrosion breakage and wear can lead to the plate being not seeable or even present any more. other without plates you just have to figure out which goes to which. now which direction is correct? i think that pointed forward may be for the in cab tank and centered would be fo rthe aux tank. then if you have a third tank back would be the passenger side aux dealer installed tank.

yeah my plate is metal and says aux and main on it i just wasnt sure which was considered main or aux, so with it the way mine points the valve itself is 180* out of place since my long end is on main. im not even sure if the saddle tank is hooked up or not i know there is a 3/8 or so rubber hose that the PO filled with silicone that come out and over near the top of the tank so im guessing that its the hose for that tank only one way to find out.

i love these old trucks but it always amazes me the way people "fix" things esp when sheet metal screws and indoor electrical twist locks are used lol

main is called the in cab tank. aux is the under bed tank. if its not right you can take the screw out of the handle and move the handle to the correct position. or replumb the hoses underneath. i always though the arrow should point to which tank is being used.

i cleaned the plate up real good today while i was trying to get my brake lights working, and the pointer is on MAIN as is the tank switch on the dash. guess i just figured since AUX was on top main was as well but main is on the lower right corner aux is upper right.
