windshield buffing?

Post by onetuford »

Anyone know if you can buff or polish out some light scuffing from a windshield? It's not real deep, more of a haze than anything from a bad wiper some years ago.

A buddy of mine used the stuff that cleans and polishes headlights that gets the yellowing off. He used it with a buffer on a light scratch on his windshield and it worked, but it took him about 2 hrs.

I believe glass companies will polish windshields too.

Hey thanks for the replies. I just saw an infomercial for some magical headlight restoring compound after I posted this and wondered if that would work. First I'll call Auto Glass Specialists and see if they can fix it.

Baking soda will work to some extent. A cleaner wax will do about the same.

Eastwood has a glass polishing kit that works well.
It won't get rid of scratches but it did get the soap film off.
It comes with a buff to go in your drill and some powder you mix into a paste.
It's messy but washes right off with water.
It was worth the effort to me.
Use the low speed on your drill and keep the buff moving and don't stay in one spot too long or it will build up heat and crack the glass.

Steelwool works great. Finish with your favorite glass cleaner.

Just don't get carried away with the abrasive stuff. If you polish too hard in one spot you end up with the equivalent of an eyeglass prescription and it's like trying to look through a fishbowl........don't ask how I know this!

ruralmed, what was the abrasive number on the steel wool--0000--000--etc, & did you use a polish with it or just water. I have heard toothpaste is good but haven't tried it yet. I love getting ideas from "you that have done it". I still mess it up sometimes but I'm learning.
