Ignition switch removal question

Post by 1972hiboy »

Hey guys and gals, I bought my 71 with no keys and no pink slip ( yeah one of those lol but I have a pink now ) But I still have no keys. Is there any way to remove the ignition switch without turning it to the ACC position? The truck is kinda out in the boonies at my dads so getting a locksmith out there to make a key is not the path of least resistance. Any feedback would be so appreciated as always.

You can remove the whole ignition switch. Just twist off the bezel around it and pull it out of the back of the dash. Unplug it and take it with you. There's a special tool to remove the bezel but I always just use a screwdriver and some needle nose pliers. Put the tip of a flathead screwdriver against one of the notches in the bezel and tap it around until it's loose enough to use the needle nose to twist it off the rest of the way. Of course this is going to scratch/nick your bezel but most of ours are already that way anyway from years of lost keys. Take it to the locksmith and he can do it while you wait.

Two thoughts
1) run a hot wire to the coil (with a resistor for extended use) and jump the starter solenoid.
then drive it to the lock smith. ...or
2) take the door lock cylinder out and hope that it's the same as the ignition.

to remove the whole switch which is the easy way. do as sargentrs said. to start the truck with using that switch. unplug the switch from the back and plug in a different switch to start the truck. also to get a key for the doors. you can remove the passenger door lock and take it to the locksmith to have a key made. if it fits the ignition switch then no one has ever changed the igntiion switch out on you.

oh nice. I wasnt sure if you could take out the whole thing via loosing the bezel and taking if out with the switch attached. Luckily I have a old MAC dash key for fords so this wont be a problem. luckily as well this isnt a driver yet so I can take it out and get this done at my leisure. cool thanks for the info guys!
