How do you remove the turn sig. lever

Post by f100ranger1969 »

I finally got a chrome turn lever for my '69 and wanted to swap out the old black one but I can't seem to get the old one off. I was under the assumption that it just unscrewed. This is how I got one from the junkyard off a '66. Now I've chewed up my original with a pair of pliers tring to force it but it will not move. Any suggestions?

I thought it just unscrewed, all of our trucks do. I even play with that thing when I am bored when I am waiting in the truck for some reason.

It should just unscrew. I would pull the steering wheel and take a look in there to see if something is binding it up.

Yes, it just screws into the turn signal switch. Be careful messing with it though...or you might end up breaking that switch. :o Here's a visual...the yellow arrow points to where the turn signal lever screws into the switch:

Thanks for all the info guys. I guess mine is just corroded in there. I'll keep working it. WD-40 wont cause any problems in there with the switch will it?

It shouldent, I think the worst it could do would be clean out the electrical stuff, and maybe help reduce corrosion.

Try a quick squirt of PB Blaster instead of WD-40. It works better as a rust penetrant.

WD40 is not actually formulated as penetrating oil. It's a little to thick to work efficiently.
It actually formuled to displace water. (Water Displacer40)

My first '68 Ford 4WD, picked up in 1999, needed some interior work where I had to pull the bench seat. Then I decided to install new carpeting, which meant I had to remove the seat belt brackets.
Since this truck had spent all those years in the snow and salt of Wisconsin's Northwoods, I figured I'd never get the bolts out. I used a quick squirt of something my buddy gave me on each bolt end, under the cab, had a smoke, and they walked right out. The product was JB-80, and is advertised as "Twice as Good"! It's similar to WD-40, but nails rust also. Moving to Tennessee, I couldn't find it around here, so "Knock-R-Loose" and Liquid Wrench fill in for me now.
Too many guys rely on WD-40 for everything, and it wasn't made for everything. It's basically a lubricant.

I just use WD40 for giving stuff ***BLING*** and attracting dirt.  JK I'm a firm believer in the PB Blaster also. Good stuff but hate the smell but for some reason it's addicting.

I also do this. I wonder how many times my turn signal lever has been unscrewed and screwed back in? Been driving my truck 25 some odd years. lol
