My new vinyl headliner

Post by Joshpow »

Rustbucket got a vinyl headliner. It is just hardboard cut to fit and vinyl applied. I replaced the screw in the center of the liner with a push style piece to keep screw out. It made a little bump in the center but otherwise it all laid down great. Being where it is the perfect round bump looks good so Im happy. Took heat gun and warmed the hardboard and made it give little easier to make rear corner bends. Anyways, heres my pics. Tell me what you think.

Did you do this to your visors as well?

My visors are a little dirty and stitching some vinyl on to them would probably be the easiest and most economical solution.

Where did you put your vinyl? I think JoAnn fabrics may carry some.

My visors are actually redyed 75 f100 visors on the 72 rods. Originals in mine had some ugly orange work and they werent very nice. You could cover a set if you were good enough at sewing and cutting. You could re-dye yours if you wanted if they were solid but just dirty. The vinyl came from a ben franklin craft store near me. Just a hometown spot but pretty nice quality stuff. Anywhere you could get a deal on it. My recommendation is make sure it is thin and stretchy. Also, make sure they roll it instead of folding it when you get it. The folded mine and had a slow go getting the creases outta the vinyl. Thanks JL00 for the compliment. Not anything spectacular but I like the simple look and hey its got color instead of the original white board. You can do one. Anyone with half a mind could duplicate if not improve this! Take care.

My visors need redone too. I'll have to look into that.

Great Work on the Headliner.

Great job on your headliner... looks fantastic!

I bought a roll of heavier, black "leather-grain" vinyl from Hobby-Lobby to re-do my headliner and door panels. I've used this stuff before to reupholster bar stools and a motorcycle seat, but haven't done anything to the truck yet because I can't decide on what to use as a backing board. What did you use? Fiber-board? Thin plastic? Fiberglass? Any suggestions on what works best without sagging and allows good adherence for the vinyl?

Again, an awesome job... very clean looking! Congrats!

I used the masonite hardboard and thurned the rougher side down to glue the vinyl to. slick up to avoid moisture damage. Stuff is sold at lowes and home depot. bout the same stuff they use for some of the panels in newer vehicles. It is a composite board. Not sure what its made of but little more sturdy than original but still workable.

I really need to do mine as well. I was hoping to save my original one but it was sagging pretty bad. I've been reading several articles what others have done, including yours, but I haven't done anything. Good job.

Looks good. I have also been thinking about doing this. I was thinking about getting some of that fake leather and gluing it to my original headliner board. I also want to use this same mtl to make a cover for my dashpad, complete with a sewn seam along the front edge. My metal door panels were cut up by a previous owner, so I want to replace them by making some nice wooden panels.

What thickness hardboard/masonite did you use?
