speaker placement options question for fellow enthusiasts

Post by hedz »

hey fellow members.

question.

i like having my gas tank behind my bench seat. i will not move it elsewhere. noone can convince me otherwise. i realize taking a direct hit can cause a nasty explosion. not even the threat of death will convince me... for now. and i don't want to add one of those headliners that's made of plastic and houses 4 speakers one in each corner and a radio space and cubby. i think it's ugly and the opposite of tasteful for my bump. and i don't want to put speakers in my door panels. they're pretty the way they are, all original and unmolested like with their deep green metallic paint job on metal(yep i got metal door panels with the dimpled horizontal lines). so this is obviously taking away my options.

so this means that i cannot place any speakers behind my bench. has anyone created a speaker box to go under their bench seats/bucket seats bomber seats(whatever)? perhaps a box that your bench is forced to fasten onto, raising the height of your seat? because this is what i'm considering, besides adding a very nice speaker to replace the dash speaker. I was thinking 2 4x10s, 2 tweeters, and a 10' sub in a box. this is just the speakers i would like inside of this imaginary box. i know all about center console speaker setups. i don't care for this as a solution.

thoughts anyone? anyone already done this? anyone already tried this or seen this and know it's a terrible idea?

by the way i'm a tall ass dude, so adding height to the bench wouldn't bother my legs a bit. and i won't ever chop the top. ever never ever

been procrastinating on my other threads. i'm spread thin, mentally, right now. but this has been bugging me

I have thought of putting speakers under the dash facing driver an pass feet so you couldnt see them, but i havnt had time to look an see how that would work. It might be something to look into. As far as putting a custom box under the seat thats a good idea if you can come up with a layout an as long as your sub has it room to move around an has its air space to not sound like crap then it should work great. Depending on the music you play an 8" sub would give more room to work with and if your a heavy metal guy then the smaller subs hit faster then a larger sub would so in return this can all sound good still. Maybe build two boxes for under both driver an pass side for two 8's or 2 10's with the amp being in the middle of the bench. This should work depending on how deep the subs are in relastion to the seat bottom, an you might get away without having to raise the seat up at all. Again all of this is in my head an ive never even looked under the seat an planed anything like that out but it sounds like itll work in my head haha

I've been thinking where I want to put a couple small speakers and came across this but am not sure if they'll fit the 67-72 trucks.

I really don't like the head liner with the speakers and head unit built into it. I wouldn't mind cutting my door panels if there was a trim kit available to make it look good.

Ive seen a few pics of speakers put into the cab sides right next to your shoulder area under the seat belt shoulder mounts on the cab.

That is where mine are right now and I hate them. They are right in my ear. Even with the radio turned down, you can hardly carry a conversation in the truck. Good if I'm riding with my wife... 8)

not a big rap guy, llisten to alot of classic rock and blues and whatsis. i'm going to do some research because you deffinitely got me thinking now with 8s in consideration.

i like this idea of speakers facing the feet. unfortunately there will be sound clarity lost if this is done though. but to what extent i cannot say because our cabs are so small that this may be negligent. my floor is currently ford winter green paint which would detract as a finish acoustically with feet facing speakers. dynamat or bedliner would most certainly perform better with this setup. I got a sweet deal on two boxes of bondo bedliner kits from work so i would have extra to do my floorpans. my brothers 90s nissan truck is wired for sound and has great clarity with only 2 speakers, 2 tweeters and 1 sub.

8s should constitute a lesser height increase than a 10. I now consider the box to hold two 8s or one 10. i still want it to have two 4x10s and two tweeters. maybe two 6x9s if they were positioned at 135 degree angle facing upwards at the front of the bench? the 10s i have lying around(but would not use, they're fubar) have deep magnets. deep magnets for this are no bueno.

What about two speakers on your center hump facing each person as far forward as possible? Iv seen this set up for jeep guys an doesnt look to bad if you dont mind two speakers looking at you when you look down haha

Haha, I'm interested in this solution...

The way mine are setup is that I'm using the magnet in the speakers to attach it just above my fuel tank :D

It sounds a little tinny, but nothing adding some padding behind it can't fix.

...people call this ghetto...

BUT! I added about another 8 feet of speaker cable to each speaker so when I have tailgate, or when I'm hanging outside the truck, I just simply remove the speaker and attach it to the outside of the truck, or on the side! Then people think I'm a genius :D

Here is how they look. I have also covered the headliner with felt.

How do they sound??? Do they rattle at all since the headline only has minimal support?

Yeah...headliner speakers rattle and vibrate the headliner...doorpost speakers make you deaf...dash speakers block your vision and/or come off at the wrong times...best arrangement I've found for sound in these old steel cans is replace the stock dash speaker and then hang a 6X9 of your choice off the bottom of the dash...I put a bookshelf speaker in a backet on the hump right under the heater blower for better sound and room enough on the hump to have a console/beverage holder. Door speakers are the next best bet...if you don't mind carving up the doors and going back in occasionally to replace door speakers after they fail from moisture exposure.

The speakers sound great to me. I have no rattle issues. I also have 6x9s in my doors. Since they are close to the center of the roof, they do just fine. I have this setup in both our trucks.

and that is awesome!

this makes me think about some fiberglass molds for some reason. they're fairly simple to make if you don't mind the sanding. perhaps just a corner piece to fit a small speaker, one in each corner and have this replace two pieces of our trim molding, not all, but just two. then a traditional headliner could be used without modification but still have acoustics from above.
