Shift boot under or over carpet?

Post by bjde0b »

Does anyone have a photo of original carpet and a floor shift boot. Is the boot screwed on over the carpet, cut around the square section and screwed under the carpet or trimed around the circle section and screwed down?

the boot will sit directly on the metal hump. then the carpet over that. the trim ring holds the carpet in place

I might be wrong, but I don't think they used a trim ring on bumps, just on dents.

Two ways to think about it. Screw it to the floor, cut the carpet to go around it, and there's a chance the carpet will unravel. Screw it on top of the carpet, and it eliminates carpet unravelling.

I'm going with the latter on mine, since the factory boot has a reinforcement plate molded in. Use black oxide screws, and it should look just fine. :2cents:

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???

I think I agree. The truck I took it out of had rubber floor mat and I think it was on top. That was two years ago so hard to remember.

Good morning,

While putting this together on my truck a few weeks ago I chose to put the rubber boot on top of the floor mat.

I thought it over and realized that this way, not only would the hole I cut in the floor mat be completely guaranteed to be hidden, but this way it's possible to remove the boot to access the shift cane assembly without disturbing the carpet/mat at all. If the rubber boot is fastened in place under the carpet/mat, then the carpet/mat could be in the way of removing the shift cane in the future, if you ever want to.
